Michael Real Obituary
REAL, Michael January 23, 1940 to December 21, 2020 Michael Real was an author and professor emeritus of Royal Roads University, where he taught for twelve years., his subject being Communication and Culture. His research emphasized the role of media and Communication in human activity. Before joining Royal Roads in 2004, he taught at the University of California at San Diego for nine years, San Diego State University for 20 years and Ohio University for four years . He was a wonderful teacher and mentor to his students, many of whom became his friends for life. During his storied career, Michael led several major research projects and has produced and hosted a variety of television and radio programs. His numerous publications include four books, and scores of scholarly and general publications. His focus has been on media, culture and social responsibility. Being present at Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington in 1968, influenced him greatly. Michael always had a positive outlook and saw the best in people. He often supported individuals going through difficult times, helping them to believe in themselves and to succeed. Michael was a lover of travel, food, a good martini, music, movies, television and especially football! A longtime fan of the San Diego Chargers, Michael worked hard not to miss a game- no matter where he was in the world. He was a kind and generous friend, a charming companion, and a very entertaining raconteur. Michael leaves his beloved daughter, Marisa, and grandson, Bear, as well as four siblings, Peg, Cathleen, Phil, and Martha, and his partner Catherine Scorey. He was so dearly loved by his family, and friends. We will all miss hearing that wonderful laugh, and listening to his many stories.
