REDSHAW, Michael John April 11, 1948 - July 7, 2017 Michael, son of Oliver and Kathleen (Baker) Redshaw, was born in Auckland, New Zealand. Michael had extensive music training before he went to University of Auckland to study classical piano with Janetta McStay. He graduated with his Bachelor of Music in 1971. Further study continued for a year with Joseph Bloch at the Julliard School in New York before he headed to Britain. He attended the Royal College of Music as an Associated Board Scholar, and was a pupil of the eminent teacher and pianist, Kendall Taylor. While at the RCM, he won the Hopkinson Gold Medal which was presented by the Queen mother. Subsequently he taught at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music from 1974 to 1978, and then at the Birmingham School of Music. He moved to Calgary, Canada in 1980 and taught at Mount Royal College and the University of Calgary. In 1986 he started his Doctorate at the University of Alberta under his advisor Helmut Brauss, finishing this in 1990. In 1996 he moved to Victoria and joined the Victoria Conservatory of Music which conferred on him the status of Examiner Emeritus in 2000. He continued to perform, teach, and adjudicate at various festivals, until 2011 when he retired as the result of a sudden medical illness. Michael was very grateful to have a great medical team to manage the Parkinson's Disease and visual disability. He was survived by his brother Roger, sister-in-law Maria, niece Katrina, and a number of best friends such as Koji Shum, Heather Lindstedt, Ivan Andrews, Roger Schmidt, Denis Rout, Thomas James (& his family) to name a few. Special thanks to his physicians Dr John Kelly, Dr. Tim Troughton, Dr. William Orr, Dr. Murray Urasmus, Dr. Mohamed Gheis. Thanks also to the loving and caring staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital during multiple stays since 2011, and at Mt St Mary Hospital where he stayed the last 5 months of his life. His Funeral will be held at 1pm, Saturday July 22, 2017 at St Andrew's Cathedral. (740 View Street, Victoria.)
