Mile Basic Obituary

BASIC, Mile (Mike) Mike Basic passed away quietly at home with his family at his bedside on June 7, 2009. Mike was born in Tinj, Croatia on November 1, 1935. As a young man, he emigrated to Canada to escape Communist Yugoslavia and start a better life. He eventually settled in Winnipeg where he met his wife, Hedi. He later moved his family to Toronto, where he was passionately involved in the Croatian community through politics and soccer. In the early 80's, the family moved to Victoria and Mike and Hedi opened Basic Kneads Bakery, Mike's cherished, home-away-from home. Mike made many wonderful friends throughout his life and took great joy in being with his family. He especially loved being Did (Grandpa). He is survived by Hedi, his wife of 45 years, his daughters Diane (David Hillier) and Miriam, his son Tony, his niece Branka and his beloved grandsons, Stephen and Evan. His funeral will be held in Croatia, where he is survived by his brother Pasko and his sister Slavka. It is Mike's wish that his friends and family gather to share stories and memories in a Celebration of Life on Saturday, July 4 at St Elizabeth's Church, 10030 Third St in Sidney at 12 PM. 545564

He will sure be missed, that was a man who lived life large and I think invented the 'go big or go home' motto. We should all be as passionate as he was.

We have so many fond memories of Mike and Hedi from our frequent visits to the bakery in Cordova Bay. Always a warm smile, a few good laughs and a little chat about our families or world events. We all gathered around your tables and you made it feel like home. Mike had many great recipes but reached "fame" status with his Hot Cross Buns - never to be duplicated elsewhere! You will be missed and remembered by many. Thank you for making a difference in our community.

Hedi; All of us at TPM Mgmt & the Pang's wish to send their most heartfelt condolances to you and your family. We enjoyed our visits with Mike over the years while he was a tenant at Cordova Bay Shopping Centre and were so happy when he was able to retire and finally have the time to spend with his family. I am only sorry it was such a short time for him. Please keep your memories close to your heart as those are the things that will keep him with all of us.
