Myrna WRIGHT Obituary

WRIGHT, Myrna Yolanda October 13, 1942 - December 11, 2012 December 11, 2012 marked the sudden passing of an exceptional soul. Myrna was born in Quezaltenango, Guatemala, and first came to Canada in 1960 to attend boarding school in North Bay, Ontario. In 1966 she moved to Toronto, where she met her soul mate, Colin. Married in 1971, they began a slow trek west, living in Sudbury and Calgary, and closed the decade by adopting Victoria as their home. Myrna personified grace; she lived simply, but elegantly and well. While her open heart and adventurous spirit ensured a passion for travel, her exquisite home and garden in Oak Bay were the twin canvasses upon which she wrought her art; throughout the years she graciously opened both for the benefit of various charitable fundraising tours. Myrna was loyal, wry, salty, generous, opinionated, and profoundly humane. She had an extraordinary capacity for friendship, and cemented those bonds over endless pots of tea and conversations that spanned gardening, politics, heritage, conservation, art, and everything between. Even among those who did not know her by name, Myrna was a cheery and familiar sight as she pootled around Oak Bay in her tiny vermillion Austin pickup truck bristling with gardening gear, a sight that rarely failed to raise a smile from young or old. For those who knew and loved her, the loss is incomprehensible; we will never see her like again. Myrna is survived by her much- beloved husband Colin, cherished son Nigel, dear daughter-in-law Cheryl, grandson Braydon, and her diverse, but fiercely loyal, group of friends now united by grief, but honoured to have shared in her all too brief life. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the S.P.C.A., Women in Need, or the Dandelion Society.

We are so sorry to learn of Myrna's death. Sylvia and I recall the wedding to Colin and many other happy times when Myrna and Colin lived in Toronto in the early 70's. All so fresh in the mind but all so long ago. Our deepest sympathies to Colin and Nigel and the family.

Myrna was an inspiration to me for the 15 years that I knew her. She cultivated beauty - in her garden, in our garden, in so many gardens in Victoria - and in her home, which is full of artful treasures. Myrna's eye could see possibilities; she has been creatively up-cycling and re-cycling "finds" for years. I have a chair in my dining room with a torn silk cover - when I said I must get it repaired Myrna assured me it looked better ripped, and that is how it's stayed! Myrna was special to everyone in our family - speaking Spanish with Meag, hiring our Kiwi Jay, getting Grant to dig holes, visiting with Bre, Finn and Taya. It was a gift to know Myrna, and I hope to carry her graceful and adventurous attitude towards living forward. Love to Colin, Nigel and Cheryl.

Myrna graciously gave me a tour of her garden a couple of years ago. She was such a lovely woman and talked alot about her husband. A very sad loss.

Myrna was part of the fabric of our South Oak Bay neighbourhood; always a wave and smile as she was preparing for or returning from her gardening vocation, somewhere in the area; ever ready with advice and a twinkle her eye. Colin, we cannot imagine how you and Myrna's family feel during this difficult time, but we are honoured to have known her. The Lindquist Family, 870 St. Patrick Street
