Nadine LEBUS Obituary

Married more than 65 years, Mom passed away peacefully at RJH with her son Ken by her side. It was early morning on a Monday, logical: she hated getting up for work to start the week!

Born into a Scottish-English family in Esquimalt, Dine attended Lampson Street Elementary and Esquimalt HS, then office training at Sprott Shaw Business School, like her mother. After work in the private sector, she moved to public schools in the early 1970s. Dine found her calling in elementary schools, where she was the emotional centre of McKenzie Elementary School as the office manager, retiring in 2002.

She loved animals, her family and singing 'Happy Birthday.' As she aged into cognitive challenges, Mom always retained an easy grace and remained a perfect host for 'guests' who assisted her to age in place at home. Special thanks to our team who gave their patience and love: Natalie, Celia, Angie, Paola and Flaminio.

Nadine met her future husband Orie through a mutual friend in the mid 1950's. They were married 65+ years. (And the mutual friend was her Maid of Honour!)

Nadine is survived by husband Orie and sons Ken and Norm, sister Lyn Shawcross (Bob) and nephews Mike Shawcross (Kelly) and Brian Shawcross, Will LeBus (Lisa), Mark (Mitsuko) and Scott (Annette) LeBus, Steve Bryant (Mary), Craig Patterson and nieces Elva Kennedy (Skip) and Sandy Hewer (Barry).

A memorial tea for Mom was held August 31 at the family residence, attended by family, neighbours and close friends.

May she rest in peace.

Just reading this. Nadine was the Secretary at McKenzie Elementary where my boys went, they say she was the best. Also worked with Nadine at the School district and through CUPE union. I am sure you will be missed Nadine, by your family and friends. I have some special memories and think about you often,

I fondly remember Mrs. LeBus from when I was a student at McKenzie Elementary School in the early 70´s. I ran into her a few times over the years and she remembered me and our family. She was the kindest woman with a beautiful smile. Condolences to the family.

When I think of Mrs. Lebus, I think of her as the beating heart of McKenzie School. The school secretary is the first person you meet when you enter a school and report to the office. She was always so friendly, kind and helpful. She made me and my children feel safe and welcome. My 2 children, Jason and Krista went to McKenzie School, and I got to know Mrs. Lebus well. In fact, when she learned that I knew how to Braille, she suggested I apply for a school job for one of the visually impaired in the district, which I did. If she had not mentioned it to me, I would never have thought of such a position. My condolences to her friends and family. I'm sure you all have many happy memories of her.

My daughter and I were just speaking of Mrs. Lebus the other day, remembering her kindness from McKenzie Elementary where both my daughters Meaghan and Amanda, and then my granddaughter Keely attended.
