Nancy Vivian Obituary
VIVIAN, Nancy Anne (nee Mercer) December 7, 1940 - October 31, 2018 Nancy departed this life at a date of her own choosing with the participation of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID). She ended her life's journey with the courage, determination, and humour that were the hallmarks of her life. She is survived by her husband of 55 years (Peter), her brother and sister-in-law (Roger and Fes Mercer, Brampton) her brother-in-law and sister-in-law (Gary and Catherine Vivian, Toronto) and many nieces and nephews of whom she was very proud. She had no children of her own but seemed to have a magnetic attraction for children of all ages. Professionally, she was an elementary school teacher with degrees from the University of Toronto and Western. She taught for over 30 years in schools across Ontario - Etobicoke, Dashwood, London, St. Thomas, Carleton and Ottawa. She taught every grade from Kindergarten to Grade 6 and completed her career, teaching special needs students in the Ottawa Board. Even when travelling, she was often approached by children wanting to be her friend. A little girl in Bombay (Mumbai) wanted desperately to be her friend and learn about being an Air Canada stewardess. Nancy was a "joiner" of the first order. If an organization had a membership card, she would apply. She was a long term member of the Cordova Bay Golf Club, Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club and Uplands PROBUS. Her passions were golf, tennis, piano, travel, and gardening. In each pursuit, she enjoyed the fellowship and friendship of a wide circle of fellow-travellers. Nancy wanted to express her gratitude to those who provided special care and assistance for her during her illness: best friend Katherine, Sue, who provided many acts of kindness at home, and the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers at the Palliative Care Unit of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital. There will be a Celebration of Life in Nancy's honour on Saturday, November 24, 2018 (2:00-4:00 p.m.) at the Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club, 1949 Marina Way, North Saanich, BC.
