Neil PORTELANCE Obituary
PORTELANCE Neil Louis passed away peacefully on October 2, 2003 at the Cowichan Lodge. Neil was born on September 27, 1913 in Vancouver B.C. and traveled as a boy around B.C. and the Queen Charlottes where his father built sawmills. He was a saw filer for Hillcrest Lumber Co. at Sahtlam and then Mesachie Lake. With his wife, Leona, they had Portelance's store in Lake Cowichan and he continued saw filing at Crofton until his retirement. Neil enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening and loved to dance. He had a wonderful workshop where he put his creative mind to work making many wooden treasures which he love to share with his family and friends. He had also sharpened skates for many years on the machine that he had made.He is survived by his wife, Leona; daughter, Carol (Gary) Scott of Chemainus; son, Stephen (Terry) of Cold Lake; four granddaughters, four great- granddaughters, many nieces and nephews and one sister in Vancouver. We were fortunate to have just celebrated his 90th Birthday at the Cowichan Lodge on September 27, 2003. A special thanks to the nurses and staff of the Cowichan District Hospital and the Cowichan Lodge for the care they gave Neil while he was there. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation.
