Nicholas DOWNS Obituary

DOWNS, Nicholas Our cherished husband and father passed away peacefully on March 10, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his devoted wife Debbie, sons, Jason (Jenn), Landon (Amanda) and Keegan, granddaughter Caly, grandson Drew, sister Betty, brothers Steve (Ev) and Monty and many nieces and nephews. Nick was born in Northfield, BC. living in both Victoria and Quesnel during his childhood. Nick attended Victoria High for grades 11 and 12. As a young man Nick's interests were cars and soccer which he played for eight years on a team sponsored by the Gorge Hotel. In 1960 Nick started his life career with the BC Forest Service, Engineering Branch on the Hixon Forest Development Road. Always a passionate steward of the environment he felt most at home in the outdoors of BC. After 37 years of service Nick retired and never one to be idle, become "Uncle Nick" the Warehouse Manager at Downs Construction. This position brought a purpose to life and a camaraderie he thrived on. Family always came first with Nick, he enjoyed gardening and his many projects, fishing with Steve, doing a good days work and sitting around a campfire. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him with his warm heart, infectious smile and askew sense of humour. On Nick's behalf the family would like to especially thank Dr. James Forster, Dr. Gail Saiger and Dr. Ryan Liebscher and also the Community and Palliative Care staff for the excellent care he received. Thank you all. A celebration of Nick's life will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 2:00pm at Saanich First Memorial, 4725 Falaise Drive, Royal Oak, BC, reception to follow in the Garden room. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Victoria Hospice Society.

My condolences go to you Debby,Jason Landon and Keegan. I am sorry for your loss. I did not know Nick all that well but he was a good man, father and husband and Grandpa. He and I used to share a beer(or two) at Jasons baseball tournament on Fathers Day and also on the Grandkids birthdays. Nick was always in good humor and a pleasure to spend time with.

Dear Debbie, Landon, Keegan and Jason as well as all of his other family members and friends whose lives were touched by this lovely, quiet spoken and gentle man. I pondered the ways that Nick, your beloved husband and father, as well as your other family members had touched our lives for so many years and in so many lovely ways. I remember Nick always as a quiet gentle man, steadfast in maintaining his colorful flower gardens and great vegetable gardens.....it was always a beautiful drive up to your home. Always greeted with a smile each time I came to the door to pick up William those many years. Truly there are no words that can express my deepest sympathy as to the loss you must feel at this time. My thoughts and prayers go out to each and all of you with hope that peace, kindness and gentleness may surround you and soothe each of you. With the most fond and loving regards as well as memories always, Jann Ashworth
