Nicholas Mathers Obituary

MATHERS, Nicholas Ian Thomas February 7, 1987 January 19, 2006 Suddenly and tragically, in the early hours of January 19, 2006, Nick Mathers, aged 18, was taken from us. Mourned by his father, David Mathers, his mother, Vickie Thomas, his older brother, Will Mathers; his grandparents, Audrey Thomas, Ian and Jacqueline Thomas; his aunts, Mary de Leeuw (Dionys), Sarah McCabe (Leonard), Claire Thomas (Jason Chan) and Rachel Langford (Blake Wilson); his uncles, John Mathers (Wendy), Stefan Langford (Pilar) and Nick Langford (Ellie Parks); cousins, Christine Mathers, Jessica McDonald, Sarah & Esther de Leeuw and his little cousin, Amy Chan; other relatives afar & many friends and admirers. Nick was born and grew up in Victoria, attended Sir James Douglas Elementary and Oak Bay High and was currently in first year Sciences at the University of Victoria. A devoted rugby player, he played at Oak Bay High School and for the James Bay Athletic Association. On or off the pitch, Nick was always up for a challenge, always posing questions and seeking real answers. He had a lively, inquiring mind with a deep core of affection underneath and, above all, a sometimes wicked, always irreverent, sense of humour. The hole he has left in the hearts of his family and friends is very deep. Nick, "We love you forever, we love you for always. " There will be a celebration of Nick's life at the James Bay Athletic Association, the Club House, 205 Simcoe Street on Sunday, January 29 at 1:00 p.m. All are welcome. The family has been touched by the lovely bouquets and sentiments left at the accident site and by the care shown by those who created this bright memorial. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the James Bay Athletic Association, 205 Simcoe Street, Victoria, V8V lZ6. 199036

I did not personally know Nicholas Mathers but for some reason his death really hit home for me. His death was both tragic and senseless. He seemed like an amazing person and my heart goes out to his friends and family. I can only begin to try and understand the pain you must all feel. Its sad it took death for those all around to understand his greatness. But at least now we all know. Im sure he will be always missed and never forgotten.

My deepest condolences.

David, you will remember me as Crystal McColl. I am so sorry for you and your family. I can only imagine the depth of your pain. Although I didn't know your son, I recognized him as soon as I saw his picture - he looks so much like you and Vicki. You have been in my thoughts and I embrace my daughters more tightly. Take care.

Vickie, David, Will and family: It's hard to find the words to express my sadness. It is easy to see how well Nick was admired and respected, which is attributed to his wonderful and loving family. I will always remember what energy he had and his sense of humour seem to shine through. Vickie - you are my dear friend - I'm here for you always. Love Paula

Nick's parents should be so proud of the son that they raised. A kind, spirited, respectful and creatively mischievious guy who always had a smile on his face that rubbed off on all those around him. Take comfort in knowing that we all think of Nick with a warm heart-squeezing love that soothes the pain of his loss. John Donne once said that being apart is not a breech, but an expansion of one's love for another, so let Nick's memory and his spirit live on and continue to strengthen the bond he has created with all of us.
