Noel Parker-Jervis Obituary

Noel John Parker-Jervis (aka Bachee and PJ) died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of September 1st, 2024, in Victoria at the age of 103. Predeceased by his wife, Betty, and his brother, Tony (Doris), he is survived by his son Jonty (Chantal), brother Chris (Catriona) and many nieces and nephews, and great / great-great ones. Born in Singapore, educated in the UK and Vancouver, he fought in World War II ('39-'45) before attending UBC. After teaching high school in Trail and Gibsons for several years, he married Betty and moved to Edmonton where he embarked on a 30-year career as an English professor at the U of A. He and Betty retired in 1987 to a house near UVic where he lived until he was hospitalized for the last three months of his life – a big thank you to all of the staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. He remained active throughout his life, was green before it was anything other than a colour, loved dogs, reading, The Hot Club of France and George Orwell. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the SPCA.

Mr Parker-Jervis was my grade 9 Social Studies teacher in Vancouver in the 1950's during the coldest segments of the Cold War. He taught the subject carefully and factually around the complicated politics of the time. He had a thoughtful way of teaching, causing many of his students to think about world issues; not an easy achievement among 14 - 15 year olds. A former classmate and I were warmly welcomed to his home in Victoria about three years ago for a visit after discovering that he was living here. It was a privilege to chat with him again after so many years. And, he remembered both of us. Fond memories from then and now.
My condolences to Jonty and Chantal.

My sincere condolences to Jonty and all other family and friends.

Mr. Parker-Jarvis was such an incredibly kind, decent and thoughtful person. During our youth in the Garneau neighborhood of Edmonton, PJ was always making sure us kids had a clean ice surface to play hockey on every Saturday morning. We realized he had been doing this for us, so we started showing up a half hour early to help shovel any snow. But, by the next week, he was there even earlier to clean the ice, leaving us kids with more energy to play.

The most important thing he taught me was sportsmanship. He was the most sportsmanlike person I have ever known. It guided me for many years of playing hockey, ball hockey and other team sports. Thank you Mr. Parker-Jervis for all that you gave.

What an honour and privilege it has been to help out my dear friend Bachee over the past decade. I always looked forward to his stories and his enthusiasm while telling them. His love of life and hearty laugh was
infectious. My life was truly enriched by his pretence. My heart goes out to Jonty and Chantal, who made his latter years so much more comfortable by making adjustments to his home which allowed him to live at home safely. He will be missed by all who were fortunate to have known him.

Jonty and Chantal, my heart hurts to hear the news of our Barche passing. He was truly a gentleman and a scholar. Tremendously generous, witty, and award winning soup maker. So many memories of Great War stories and passionate comments about politics or books at the table during lunch. I continue to be grateful every day that Barche was my friend.

We were lucky enough to live next door to P.J., Betty, and Jonty in Edmonton for about 5 years (1974-79)-great neighbours. P.J. was a lovely man, and we remember him fondly. Condolences to the family. John & Lorraine Baxter

My condolences to the Parker-Jervis family. I worked for Dr. Parker-Jervis in the early 1970s at the University of Alberta. He was creating a concordance for George Orwell. He hired me to type Orwell novels and collected letters into the main frame computer on campus. Then we would proofread the print-outs from my typing. He later hired my husband to help him with the proofreading. He was a kind, gentle man.

Mr Parker-Jervis, my grade 7 teacher in the Trail BC Junior High School. It was always an exciting home room class with his trying to control a class room full of 12 to 13 year old unruly adolescents. I am so pleased that he found his niche teaching English at University.

Bachee was a natural and gifted teacher. His stories were the best! I'm so glad I got to know him. Thanks for the memories, B., and thanks for showing me that at 103 years, one can be just as sharp, engaged and hilarious as ever!
