After a long life, Mom died peacefully with family by her side on the evening of October 1, 2025. Mom was born on May 2, 1924, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Predeceased by her husband, Nick, daughter Judy and son Ricky, she leaves her son Gerry (Linda), daughter Marilyn, and daughter Karen (Dale) as well as 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Mom was the second of five daughters born to Michael and Eugenia Makutra, who immigrated to Canada from the Ukraine at the start of the 1900s by riding a train west until they reached the last stop, then travelled further by ox and cart until they settled in the North Battleford area in the Saskatchewan prairie. Clear to see where Mom got her strength and determination that carried her for 101 years. Mom and Dad married in 1941 in Saskatoon and started a family soon after. She married into and embraced the Catholic faith and became a very active member of her beloved St. Georges Cathedral and CWL, well into her 80s, which provided her a strong sense of community and faith, something I know she held dear until her last days. We were nourished through her love of gardening and cooking many traditional Ukrainian dishes and she was happy to have family and friends around her to enjoy it. Mom had a tremendous love for animals and nature and was able to enjoy travelling over the years, even being able to visit the Ukraine. It wasn't until 2018 that Mom came to Victoria to spend her final days. I am forever grateful to have been there for her these last few years, and we want to extend the deepest thanks to all the staff at Saanich Peninsula Hospital Extended Care that provided her with a safe and loving transition to her eternal life.
Cremation has taken place, and Mom will return home to Saskatoon to be laid to rest with Dad sometime in the spring. Vichnaya Pamyat.
