Paddy MARK Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the family of Dr Patricia Mark announces her sudden and unexpected death on April 8th, 2021 at the age of 79.

Paddy was born in Ballyshannon, Northern Ireland in 1941 into a family of doctors. She graduated in medicine from Trinity College, Dublin. This was the start of her life's passion. Her medical career was a calling, not a job, and she threw herself into it whole heartedly.

She met her future husband, Dr Mark Nixon, in 1966 in St. Peter's Hospital, Chertsey, England, when she sat herself down across from him at lunch in the cafeteria. They emigrated to Canada in 1967, living in Toronto briefly before driving across Canada to Vancouver with their great friend Stella and all their worldly possessions packed into a VW Beetle.

They were married in 1971 and subsequently moved to Vancouver Island where Paddy practiced full-service family medicine and Mark joined the department of anesthesia in Nanaimo. She enjoyed a very long and successful career as a family physician and was one of the founding practitioners of the Sow's Ear Medical Clinic in Lantzville BC. She very proudly practiced in a full-service capacity and never shied away from challenging situations. She excelled in roles as a teacher, mentor, medical leader and advocate, always with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of mental and physical energy.

Sometime during all of this she and Mark found time to raise a family.

Paddy was always a tireless advocate for those at risk. In the second half of her career she undertook the challenging task of addiction management medicine and worked in the corrections system, taking on new responsibility there even in her last days. She practiced with great empathy and integrity; always to the benefit of her patients.

Paddy extended this empathy to friends of the four-legged variety. She was an enthusiastic supporter and fundraiser for the BC SPCA and their Nanoose Bay house was always home to several dogs and cats, all of whom were adopted or rescued, sometimes from very unpleasant situations. Her annual sales drive for SPCA calendars was always one of the year's salient events.

Paddy was a very accomplished writer and historian, another interest which those who shared found tremendously beneficial. She never tired of discussing the topic over a glass of wine. Her dear father, Dr James Alison Mark had been a POW in World War II, surviving 3 1/2 years as prisoner at the real bridge on the river Kwai in Thailand. She explored this part of her personal history by learning all she could about WWII. To this end she became involved with the Imperial War Museum in London and volunteered in transcribing prisoners journals kept secretly during the war.

It is from her father that she inherited her highest calling: to be of service. It is also telling of her deep love for him that she came to be caring for inmates all over BC.

Paddy and Mark have been avid and very skilled gardeners, growing their sprawling world class Rhododendron garden together for over 48 years. Paddy's specific passion was alpine rock gardens, the tiny yet tough mountain plants mirroring her own small yet feisty self. Many of her friends developed a serious interest in gardening as a benefit of their friendship. Paddy and Mark would never hesitate to share their expert advice, not to mention seedlings cuttings, and full-grown plants.

For many years, the two hosted a large garden party for their friends, including newcomers to their community, in their beautiful garden, a bright highlight on everyone's calendar. Affectionately known as "the bun fight", family and friends would contribute time and effort to hull strawberries, slice buns, and provide oven space for cooking turkeys and hams. In her usual firm manner, Paddy would recruit the surgeons to carve the meat --the occasional misguided soul considered declining, albeit briefly.

Paddy leaves behind a devastated family: husband Mark Nixon; daughters Ruth and Sarah (Jesse Capon), stepchildren Clare McQuaid (Rick McQuaid) and Paul (Iris Nixon), grandchildren Hannah Nixon, Gillian Nixon, Clementine Nixon, Georgia Nixon, Elliot Capon, Luke McQuaid and Emma McQuaid. She was predeceased by her stepson Adam. A wide circle of cousins, friends, colleagues, patients and animals also mourn her sudden passing.

The Irish saying, "For evil to succeed, it requires only that good men do nothing," was one of her favourites. It exemplifies her credo to work tirelessly in benefit of that which she believed in.

A memorial in her garden is planned for the summer, when regulations allow. In lieu of flowers if you are moved to make a donation to the BC SPCA or your favorite animal charity in her memory she would have been so touched.

Godspeed, dear friend.

Paddy and I studied the diaries of medical officers in Japanese captivity which she transcribed on behalf of the Imperial War Museum in London. Mark will remember the convivial suppers which we had with Rod Suddaby - then head of Manuscripts at the Museum - and I am grateful for her generous encouragement and friendship. R.I.P. Paddy and thank you.

Learned about Paddy's death from our mutual friend, Kathy Moore. Paddy and Mark arrived in Nanaimo about a yr. after I did in '66. I knew Mark better as I was a scrub nurse in the OR for 6 yrs. Lost track of them and many colleagues after moving to Vanc. in '78. May warm memories of her spirit and life fill the hearts of all who knew, loved and cared about her.

I have only just learned about the passing of Dr MarkI am shocked and saddened beyond measure..Paddy was my GP for over 25 years and I missed her greatly when she retired from her Sow’s Ear practice. It was a great privilege and an unforgettable experience to have her as my doctor. Paddy was a fantastic advocate for her patients..always going that extra mile to help. We had many conversations about our children, grandchildren and lives after leaving the UK. There are many very good doctors, Paddy was one of the great ones..She made a huge difference and the world is a poorer place without her in it.

She was a great supporter of animal welfare groups and I knew her through my job at NRGH and as a Director of CatSpan Ferals Registered Charity as she was a supporter of our little cat rescue charity.

Paddy was a very good friend and my late husband, Keith, and Paddy used to discuss the second world war as both of their fathers served in that war as doctors and survived it.

I just learned of Paddy’s passing and am devastated by this tremendous loss. I first met Paddy in 2010 through the BCSPCA Parksville calendar fundraiser and was so impressed with her energy and enthusiasm that I have participated in the calendar ever since even though I live in Victoria. I looked forward to seeing Paddy every November at a Nanaimo Serious Coffee to pick up my calendar order. I will miss you, Paddy. You truly exemplified love, care, and dedication to all creatures of both the two-legged and four-legged variety. You were an Angel to all. My deepest condolences to your family.

As a colleague in the health system, I always experienced Dr. Mark as present, courageous, passionate, caring and tireless. She was the family doctor of a good friend who's health took a turn and in his last year she made house calls and her concern for him was evident and genuine. She advocated for vulnerable populations, those struggling with mental health and substance use challenges, and spent many evening hours attending meetings and committees to add her wisdom and sense of urgency to work aimed at helping these populations. I hope she looks back and sees a life well lived, other lives deeply touched, and a lasting impression on a grateful community.

Dr Mark really helped me emotionally, when I was going through the custody battle with my ex daughter in law and her addictions.
I was a nurse on 3rd floor at NRGH and her caring, kind and thoughtful advise helped me through a very painful time. Bless her!
So sorry for your loss. May her memories give you peace and comfort
Kind regards, Lorri

I had the good fortune to have Paddy as my family GP for myself and my daughters. We also crossed paths at NRGH in a professional capacity. She supported me through profound challenges and never once failed to make me feel heard, valued and important...both as her patient and as an RN...but more importantly as a human. Her stamina, her passion and her, frankly staggering, commitment to the most vulnerable in our community inspired me. And she did it with such a charming sparkle in her eye! Her loss is immeasurable.

Dr. Mark was my doctor and she was also a friend and neighbour. I will always remember how she treated me with such compassion and for her joyful spirit. She never rushed me through an appointment and always took time to listen. I always looked forward to submitting photos to her for her BCSPCA calendar fundraiser, which often lead to us having conversations about animals she and her family had rescued. The last time I saw Paddy was up on our local hiking trail on Notch Hill about 5 days before she died and I am so grateful for that last conversation I had with her. My deepest condolences go out to her husband, her daughters and to her extended family, friends and colleauges. The world lost a very special person and she will be missed. Thank you Paddy. May you rest in peace.

She was amazing listening to her patients taking extra time if needed and all around a great doctor she had so much experience that you had to try her ideas take all the tests needed for her to make up a plan for so many patients of hers she had so much compaction for some patients that had there hole life changed in a split second for being in the wrong place at wrong time or when a patient had no control over that moment that changed his/her life forever. I will truly miss you and hope there’s someone out there that will continue the life plan we had arranged for many years. If anyone wants to talk or have a good cry you can call me anytime. 2508020207

Before today's acute care model with hospitalists and ihealth, Paddy Mark and other g.p.'s in our area had to attend daily at NRGH when their patients were in hospital (a condition of admitting priveleges.) Early one morning, I was reading the chart of a patient on my unit, and noticed her distinctive handwriting in the progress notes, an entry she'd made several hours earlier. I asked the charge nurse if that was correct: it was 0730h now, but Paddy Mark had already done her rounds? I was told what transpired: Her elderly patient became very anxious and restless during the night, staff could not help her settle, and they had finally phoned Dr. Mark at home in the wee hours and asked for direction (orders.) Paddy Mark told them, no, she'd come herself, and so, she dressed, jumped in her car, and drove 25 km from her home ,through a miserably cold night, to attend and comfort her patient. Later the same day, between appointments with her patients at the Sow's Ear Clinic, she returned again to check on that patient and others, without any hint of weariness or inconvenience. Quite likely, she also checked whether there were issues needing her attention in her role as (then) NRGH chief of staff. Her feisty, no-nonsense, let's-get-on-with-it attitude was legendary; she lived it 24/7.

Dr. Mark's commitment to service, to the Hippocratic oath, and the the relief of suffering knew few bounds. And her commitment to sharing joy, finding humour where she could, and inspiring others to be their best were equally profound. Our community, her family, her friends--2 and 4-footed-- have lost a wonderful soul. RIP, Paddy, and thank you for all your heartfelt care and kindness to others.

Dr Mark cared for my son who had the utmost respect for her. He loved her humour, her fiestiness, her passion for animals and that she never gave up on him. He would most certainly tell you this himself but sadly he to, left this world too soon. I just wanted you to know that Dr. Mark treated my son with compassion and dignity. She was a little dynamo and I am saddened to learn of her passing.

I am so sad to read this. I was an R.N. at NRGH from 1975-2010 and Paddy was an amazing presence on the ward. She was a ball of fire, always laughing, full of energy and so very caring. As a patient myself (frequently since 2004), I witnessed her caring and professionalism from the patients viewpoint. I never had her as my doctor but as she dealt with some of my fellow patients in 4 bed rooms I was quietly listening to her "from behind the curtain" and was always impressed by her bedside manner whether it was an elder, a person with addiction issues or other medical problems. I want to send the family my deepest condolences, she will be sorely missed by so many, what a wonderful life full of service to others. RIP Dr. Mark :( , a bright light has left NRGH.
