Parzival COPES Obituary
Parzival Copes passed away peacefully at the Veteran's Memorial Lodge at Broadmead in Victoria on September 8, 2017. He was predeceased by his brother Jan, his sister Betsy and by his loving wife of 62 years, Dinie. He is survived by his brother Art, his three sons and their wives and his six grandchildren: Raymond Copes of Victoria, BC, his wife Marilyn and their sons Christopher, Kevin and Colin; Michael Copes of Comox, BC, his wife Patti and their daughter Tarynn; and Terrence Copes of Sudbury, ON, his wife Suzanne and their children Alyssa and Nicholas.
Parzi, as he was known to his friends and colleagues, lived a long and productive life.
Born in Nakusp, BC, he moved as a child with his family to Vancouver, BC and then, at the age of nine, to Amsterdam. In his youth he lived through the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, where he made connection with the Dutch Resistance. He was imprisoned in a forced labour camp until the liberation of the eastern Netherlands by the advancing Canadian Army in April 1945, which he joined in the field as an interpreter. He returned to Canada in 1946 as a student in Political Science and Economics at the University of British Columbia and later completed his PhD at the London School of Economics. On his return to Canada he worked at the Dominion Bureau of Statistics in Ottawa. He subsequently obtained a faculty appointment at Memorial University of Newfoundland and served as Head of the Economics Department. He returned to Vancouver as a member of the charter faculty at Simon Fraser University where he was founding Head of the Department of Economics and Commerce. Later on at Simon Fraser he was instrumental in the creation of the Center for Canadian Studies and the Institute of Fisheries Analysis.
Acknowledged as a leading expert in the field of Fisheries Economics, he was sought after as a consultant by many national, provincial and state governments as well as international organizations. This gave him ample opportunity to travel which was a lifelong passion of his.
His long and prolific work in his chosen field garnered him much recognition and numerous awards across Canada and internationally.
Parzi will be deeply missed by his family and the many others who knew him. Sincere thanks are conveyed to the staff of the Veteran's Memorial Lodge at Broadmead who cared for him in his final months.
A Memorial Service, followed by a Reception, will take place Friday, October 6, 2pm at:
