CARNEY, Patricia (Pat) Dora
Patricia (Pat) Dora Carney, PC Senator Emeritus, CM, OBC; journalist, politician, author, educator, and matriarch, born 26 May 1935 in Shanghai, China, died 25 July 2023 in Vancouver, Canada.
Pat served 25 years in the roles of Senator for British Columbia and in the House of Commons; the first woman elected as Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre. She was also the first woman in every federal government post she held; including finance critic and appointments to the senior economic cabinet posts of Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources; Minister of International Trade; and President of Treasury Board in the cabinet (1984-1988) and Senator in the Senate of Canada (1990- 2008). Author of two books: "Trade Secrets ~ A Memoir" and "On Island ~ Life Among the Coast Dwellers" and co-author of "Tiara and Atigi".
Pat advocated for British Columbians, people of the west coast, women including indigenous women; and worked with the Arthritis Society and was a founding director of the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada. Awards include: the Governor General's Award, the Order of British Columbia, the Order of Canada, Doctor of Laws from University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and Newfoundland's Memorial University.
Pat was a contributing community member in her many circles of influence; and she had a way of empowering people by helping many navigate life changing decisions. She loved her family and friends; Saturna, British Columbia and Canada.
Predeceased by parents Dora May Sanders and John James Carney Sr., twin brother John James Carney and sister-in-law Brenda Carney, brother Thomas Carney, and grandson Wilfred Reid.
Survived by sister Norah Constance Bridget Carney, children Jane (Malcolm) Dickson Reid and John Patrick (Anna) Dickson; and family Paula (Ken) Morrison, 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Anne Carney and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the care teams in Vancouver Coastal and Vancouver Island Health; special appreciation to Erika Siu for her caregiving and dedication to Pat.
Funeral Service to take place on Saturna Island August 26 Saturday 1:30pm ~ for family and friends. Reception to follow at the Saturna Island Community Hall.
A celebration of life to take place in Vancouver September 9 Saturday 1:30pm at the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre - 6163 University Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations to Maui Relief in Pat's name would be appreciated.
