Patricia Carter Obituary

CARTER, Patricia Rose (nee Winfield) March 23, 1961 - June 5, 2018 Obituaries are funny things. One is born here, dies there and the course of one's life seemingly unfolds in a smooth, preordained manner. Life, of course, is messy and while the majority of the time decisions are yours to make sometimes you have to do your best with the genes that you are born with. Patricia's happiest memories were of growing up on Oliphant Street in Fairfield, Victoria in a grand old house. She enjoyed elementary school at Sir James Douglas, spent hours exploring Beacon Hill Park with her brother and lovingly nurtured her chickens and rabbits. Her mother tended to the five children while her father worked multiple jobs and dreamed up schemes (unsuccessful, she always noted dryly) to make his fortune. As she grew out of her teenage years medical issues began to arise and forced her to adapt. She was never bitter at the hand that fate dealt her, never used her chronic pain as an excuse but got on with life and her career. For those who showed her kindness and understanding she would move the world; for those few who judged her by what they saw rather than who she was she had only disdain. When the decision was made in consultation with the outstanding staff of Surrey Memorial Hospital to let her go gently into the night my greatest regret was that she did not regain consciousness so I could tell her "do not rage against the dying of the light, you have ever been my hero and will live on in the memories of those who knew your gentle nature best." I was very saddened to hear of Pat's passing. We met in Grade 5 at Brentwood Elementary, where we became friends, and continued school together until graduation from Stelly's. Pat was always a very generous person, and this continued after we had our boys. She always remembered their birthdays and would send something for them in the mail. We mostly lost touch, but we exchanged birthday cards up until a couple of years ago. Our sincere condolences go out to Pat's family and loved ones.

I did not know Patricia although I grew up in the same neighbourhood in Victoria two decades before she did. However, anyone who could command the love shown in the last sentence of her obituary should be remembered not only by family and friends but also by the larger world.

I am so grateful to have known Patricia. She was a remarkable person who taught me about courage, perseverance, and resilience. She loved reading and always had a good book to recommend.
