Patrick GILLINGHAM Obituary

Pat was born in Regina, Saskatchewan to Cy and Elsie Gillingham. He grew up in Victoria, graduating from Esquimalt High and then attended Ryerson, attaining a degree in Business Management.

After many years in heavy equipment sales, Pat formed 'Gillingham Equipment Ltd'. Respect, honesty and integrity were the pillars of his business ethos and he became sought after for his extensive knowledge, fair dealings and trustworthiness. Over the years many of his clients & associates counted among his closest friends.

He was an avid adventurer; stories often recounted motorcycling through Europe, travels through Australia and delving into family history in England, notably Dorset and Manchester where he was proud to have rekindled family connections. Business in Japan developed a love for the Japanese people and culture, but his heart was forever rooted in Victoria.

Pat was a storyteller, historian, collector, creator of traditions and dispenser of 'High Five's. He marvelled at good craftsmanship of any object, was a hard worker, followed many interests, and loved to find out where you were from and what brought you here. He often made acquaintances on his travels who quickly became friends invited back to share a meal around the family dinner table. Always a generous host, he was immensely proud of his family and enjoyed countless hours spent with good friends. He rarely managed to be on time, but would give you all the time in the world.

He leaves behind his wife Marilyn, children Neala (Simon), Megan (Steven) and Blair (Faith) as well as grandchildren Ellis, Rowan, Erik and Katherine.

To best remember Pat, raise a glass of good red wine and share your favourite story. In lieu of flowers please donate to Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

My heart breaks along with my family to hear of Pat's passing. My Dad Tom Balshaw brought Pat home to meet us many years ago. My Dad of very little words or expression, couldn't say enough great things about his dear friend Pat. We knew immediately how incredible Pat was and how our Dad enjoyed Pat's stories, knowledge and especially his integrity and kindness. Pat welcomed all of us into his home and we got to know Pat's beautiful family on many enjoyable occasions. Nothing beat a meal at the Gillingham's ending with a piece of Marilyn's homemade pies.
Our most sincere condolences to Marilyn, Neala, Megan and Blair and the extended family. I know you all were his pride and joy. Thanks for sharing such an extraordinary man with all of us who loved him very much.

Dear Marilyn, I was so very sorry to hear of Pat's passing and just when you had moved to be near Blair and family.
You have been wonderful neighbours over these many years - both of you so ready to help and I loved it when our kids went to school and played together. David remembers well his visits with Pat and his friend who had such a bounty of historical knowledge.
I will miss Pat and you, my good neighbour, and I do hope we stay in touch.
Our condolences to you,and to Nela, Blair and Megan,
Mary, David and Sarah (Lynch)

Shocked and sadden to hear of Pat’s passing. Met Pat when we played football for Oak Bay Farmers Construction Football Club. Rekindled our friendship in 1972, both working up in Port McNeill and watched the Canada/Russia final hockey game. We kept in touch over the years.
Carol and I send our heartfelt condolences to Marilyn and family.

I'm so sorry to read of Pat's passing, my dear Keith died a year ago, and he always spoke fondly of their Victor Street adventures growing up. I'm glad they reconnected a few years ago. As my 12 year old great nephew wrote me when Keith died: "If the people we love are stolen, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving them." This is my mantra, and I hope it will also give you support in the days, and years, ahead.

My condolences to the Gillingham family. So sorry for your loss of a loved one. Pat was a kind and generous man, I was lucky to have worked with Pat at Old Country Rentals for a bit.
