“When he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.”
-William Shakespeare

Percy,
Since the first day I walked into work you have always welcomed with open arms, even the days when I'm sure you wanted to hit me. It will be hard for me to find a boss who has done as much for me as you have. Thanks for everything and until we meet again!

Miss you Percy -John Echle

My Dear Percy,
Over the years with BC Ferries, between Otter Bay and Swartz Bay, there were opportnities we had to chat on many topics. One of the topics being, "where we came from and where we are going". I hope you know how many lives you have touched. This world was better place with you in it. You will be held in our hearts forever.
Till next time Percy
You will always be "Above and Beyond"

To Percy's Family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I worked with Percy for 22 years. For the early part of that time we were peers, and for the rest, he was my supervisor.

And we fought...god how we fought; and we laughed...god how we laughed. And I loved him..and he loved me. He told me so.
He wasn't afraid, as we men usually are, to express that emotion.

He never held himself above another human being. He had, and showed me how to use, the ability to understand that people need to be individuals, and need to express themselves. So when someone challenged him, he never took it personally, and he never held a resentment. He never felt vindictive.
On the contrary..he admired someone who would challenge him or anybody else. He admired someone with " a little fire in their belly", as he would say. He had that fire himself.
And while it may seem contradictory, the more we fought over the years..the closer we grew. I trusted him. He earned my trust. We valued our friendship much more than the result of any disagreement.
It wasn't all fighting. We had a lot more laughs and practical joking than we did fights.

My respect and admiration has grown for him over the years.
He has always shown me a great intelligence, capacity and ability to to organize, problem solve and lead others.
And I've also seen of course, that the man who sometimes showed the gruff exterior, had a soft spot, and he was very much about helping others.

I've sometimes questioned his decisions, but not his leadership. He has always been my leader, because I've wanted him to be.
If I had a problem, especially work related, I knew he was much more likely than I to solve it than I.
If I had a personal problem, then he was there for me.

I can't express enough how fortunate I have been to have had his support and influence over our 22 year journey, because I can't imagine how life would have been otherwise.

He has made my life a better life; he has made this world a better world; and I will carry him with me for as long as I'm able.

Uncle Percy…I want to thank you for everything you have ever done for me in my life. When I was a young adult making stupid mistakes you were always the one who came and rescued me without asking a question and I Thank you for that. When Vic and I were first married and he was out of work at times you would do what you could to give him work and for that we thank you. The stories we all heard from Billy confirmed what we all knew, you were a lets get it done guy from a very young age. We are going to miss your happiness and your smile we love you, Uncle Percy RIP xo

My deepest condolences to Percy's family, his friends, and the entire terminal maintenance crew. I had the honour of working with Percy during a string of summers with maintenance and it's something I think about often. Those were some of the best summers of my life, and a large part was being able to work everyday with a great group of guys…Percy was definitely a big part of that. He was the kind of man you want in your corner, the definition of someone who wears their heart on their sleeve. He was one of a kind and I will always remember him.

Gloria & Family
It was an honor to have known and worked with Percy. He certainly took care of business giving those not only
what was required but making sure it was to his high level of quality of workmanship and in many cases made others look especially good.
The saying "paying it forward" certainly holds true to him.

April 15, 2014

I was shocked and saddened at the sudden passing of Percy. He touched so many of our lives. He would always go above and beyond what was asked of him, and then check back to make sure everything was o.k. Rest in peace, Percy. To all his family and many dear friends, please accept my most heartfelt sympathies for your loss.

I have known Percy for years but have never really gotten to know him until last year when I briefly worked at Terminal Maintenance with him. His love of his family and especially those grand kids, and even his dog who I was tasked to watch for a little while, was abundantly clear. I am so sorry for your loss. We at Swartz Bay will miss his smiling face.

My condolences to all of Percy's family . A few words for Percy from Ron,
Three years till retirement was what we agreed ,
And decided together that that's when we'd leave,
No longer will I be called “ kid “ ,
Thank god for the memories of what we did ,
I've had a few beers ,
And shed a few tears ,
You'll always be in my heart and mind ,
Especially when I'm caught in a bind ,
Your back up is going to be sorely missed ,
Even if you were the on with the list ,
Many long years with three more to go ,
Our retirement day would have been a hell of a show ,
You left us to early and that's what hurts the most ,
Your time wasn't finished ,
Not nearly enough ,
No worrie's my friend,
We'll meet again,
See ya Percy

BC Ferries lost an incredible man last week. His devotion to doing the job right and sacrificing nothing for the safety and well being of his staff and co-workers will be missed. There are few people you meet in your life that have as much respect as what Percy had earned. The BCF will be grieving this loss for a long time. Percy wasn't just a co-worker but friend and a brother. Rest in peace my friend, your legacy will always live on.

I am honoured to say that I had the privilege to work with such enthusiastic dedicated manager always listening to our concerns and making us feel that you have done a good job. Gloria.I remember as a young boy over Thirty years ago when you and Percy would come over to visit my parents.Percy would always hold out his huge hand full to the brim with change. He would tell me and my brother Chris we could each take as much as we could grab. The one and only rule Percy gave us was we could only use one hand.Seemed like I was rich with all the change I hauled from Percy's paw(maybe a buck at most). He called me kiddo way back then as he now calls our daughter Faith. We are Heartbroken with Percy's sudden passing and send you and the rest of yours and Percy's families our deepest condolences.Rest In Peace "Uncle"Percy Johnson.Vince Tracey & Faith Tateham.
