Peter Nicholas William Busby

October 30, 1944 - May 24, 2025

We are sad to announce the passing of Peter Nicholas William Busby who left us on May 24, 2025 at the age of 80. Peter was born in Stratford on Avon, England. He emigrated to Canada with his parents and sister when he was 4 years old, and lived in Ontario until moving to Washington, DC in 1961. In Washington his father worked at the British Embassy and his mother worked as a teacher, while Peter began his post-secondary pursuits. In 1963, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and was posted to Victoria, BC as an officer in the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada. He served as a Canadian Peacekeeper in Cyprus in 1965, and upon return to Victoria met his wife Lynne, who was a nursing student at RJH. In 1968, he left the armed forces, graduating in 1971 with an English Degree and a Secondary Education Diploma from the University of Victoria. He then worked teaching university level English to inmates at BC Penitentiary and Matsqui prisons. This experience led him to his career in Probation. He moved to Nelson, BC with his wife and young family in 1976, where he completed a 30-year career as a Probation Officer.

Peter was a gentle soul who possessed a quiet strength, sharp wit, and a strong commitment to social justice. He was an active member of his community and the United Church, always ready to help those in need and lend a hand without being asked.

Peter is survived by his loving family - his wife of 57 years, Lynne, and their children, Ian (Ellen), Warren (Laura), and Maura; grandchildren, Abby, Amelia, Jonathan, Patrick, and Miles; his sister Carol; and nieces and nephews, Hilary, Sarah, Kathryn, Beth, Kimberley, Brian, David, and Lindsay.

He was a man who loved deeply, was deeply loved, and will be deeply missed. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, integrity, and humour.

A celebration of Peter's life will be held on August 9th, 2025 at 2 pm at Broad View United Church in Victoria BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honour to the Shelbourne Community Kitchen.
