Peter Carter Dodd

Peter Dodd Obituary

Dodd, Peter Carter June 16 1930 November 25, 2010 Spent his life, together with his wife Erica, encouraging understanding between Moslem cultures and the West. He was born and grew up in Beirut, Lebanon, and attended high school at South Kent in New York state. After graduating from Princeton he received his PhD in Sociology from Harvard University, followed by twenty years teaching at the American University of Beirut. Quoting a former student: "His modesty, demeanour, character, respect for others, profound understanding of the concerns of the Arab world and unreserved empathy with its national struggles made him a hero in our eyes ". Later, he joined the United Nations, before becoming Director of the Fulbright Foundation in Islamabad, Pakistan. Retiring to Victoria, he was active with the Canadian Institute of International Affairs (CIIA). Peter spent happy years in Victoria, enjoying the many good friends whose warm support is greatly appreciated these last months. Our thanks go to the University Choir and to the Mardi Minstrels, who indulged his passion for music. We are grateful for superb medical assistance over several years, for the services of the Victoria Heart Institute, and for the very special relief offered by the Victoria Hospice Society. Peter is survived by his wife Erica Cruikshank Dodd; their four children and families: Frances, Kika (Peter), Alex (Nikki), Daniel (Sharon); and his brother Bruce Dodd in Berkeley. A funeral service will be held at Saint Dunstan's Church on Saturday, November 27 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palestine Children's Relief Fund ( www.pcrf.net/ ). 611074

Still in my days, my heart, my mind and my song. I see you everywhere and am so grateful we had you for so long, and still do. What wonderful memories of a wonderful life you have given us.

Peter Dodd was my history teacher at Lakeside School, Seattle, during the 1950s before he went off to Harvard for his Ph.D. He was the first adult who ever told me that I was "intelligent" and it was very meaningful to an insecure adolescent, which I was at the time. I dedicated my forthcoming book of short stories to one of my sisters and to the memory "of an inspiring teacher" named "Peter C. Dodd" -- and he certainly was that. Bless him. My condolences to his family and friends. -- James Naiden 7/13/11 Minneapolis, MN

We were very saddened to hear of Peter's passing last week. Peter and Erica were (and are) great supports to our son Pete - making sure he had a place to go when he needed a good meal, a good conversation or a place to lay his head. For that we will always be greatful.
Peter was a gentle man and a gentleman. They threw away the mould after he as born.

Our prayers are with Erica and all the Dodds.

Much love Doug and Barb

Peter was one of the best and kindest men I ever knew, in academe or elsewhere. I cannot think of a single negative thing about him. The last time I heard him speak was in Vancouver, on "the Right of Return." He will return often to our memories.
