Peter Gilbertson Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peter Gilbertson. Known by many for his large size and personality, he was a man who wouldn't mince words. Peter's tremendous wit, gentle nature and endless charm will be greatly missed by his family and friends alike. Survived by his beloved wife Cheryl, sons Michael (Amy), Phillip (Lindsay), grandkids Lucas and Adrianna, as well as numerous friends, extended family and his work family.

Originally born in South Shields, England, Peter spent years with the British Merchant Navy as an electrician, ultimately ending up in Victoria, B.C. It is there that he met the true love of his life, Cheryl. It was love at first site from across the bar, with Peter adorned in dirty coveralls, and Cheryl a barely 18-year-old nurse. They soon commenced their harmonious lives together, and began their family in Victoria. First came their eldest son Michael, and two years later, Phillip. With two young boys in tow, they relocated to Cobble Hill, proving the strength of their marriage and family when they built their house while living in a 30-foot trailer for 8 months. Peter continued to work at Point Hope Shipyards and then subsequently moved on to Victoria Shipyards. It was at those two places that Peter was known as someone who could be relied upon to successfully complete just about any task that was placed upon him. With a wealth of electrical knowledge and a way with people, Peter was a stalwart within the marine community. In his spare time, besides spending time with family and friends, everyone who knew Peter knew that trains were his passion. He spent countless hours in his ever-impressive train room, a project that was 20 years in the making. In recent years, Peter found immense enjoyment in spending time, both in the train room and out, with his two grandchildren, to whom he was lovingly known as "Papa Choo-choo". Although Peter had many distinguishable accomplishments throughout his life, he was above all else a loyal friend, devoted husband and loving father and grandfather.

His Family would like to give thanks to the fantastic support and care that was given both at Victoria General Hospital and at the BCCA. For all the support on 7a/b, ICU, and the Respiratory Therapy department, we are forever grateful. A special thanks to Dr. Allison Ross for all your hard work and dedication. And to all the friends and family who have been so wonderful during this time, your support is so very appreciated. Peter left an impression on everyone he met and will remain in our hearts in the countless memories he helped create, never to be forgotten. A Celebration of Life will be held at a date to be announced.

Dearest Cheryl, it was with a heavy heart that we read Peter's obituary this morning! We have thought of you both often and said to each other, we should give them a call and get together, we really should've done that !
I first met Peter, I think in 2003 in the bank, and he would always come and see me when he wanted to wrangle something, no matter where I moved to.
He has left a wonderful positive legacy and may your wonderful memories of him help you through this time.
Sending love and light ,
Corrine and Tim
