Peter JOHNSTON Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Peter Johnston a beloved husband, brother, uncle and friend. Born in Kingston, raised in Mallorytown, Ontario he ventured west to Vancouver in 1981 after completing his studies in cartography at Fleming College. Over the years he worked at many jobs including cab driver, tour boat captain, pleasure boat marine sales and warehouse manager.

Peter could be described as a law unto himself. He brightened many rooms with his quick wit, storytelling skills, sense of fun and adventure. He was creative and smart, with an impressive knowledge of almost everything. Peter's three main passions were his wife Carol, who he met in 1987 and married in 1995; music, found through his love of piano, playing mostly classical and jazz; and sailing. There were many boats in Peter's life, from his early days with power boats on the St. Lawrence River and in the Thousand Islands, to the sailboats he and Carol spent their summers on, cruising the Gulf Islands and anchorages in the Strait of Georgia. Upon retirement, Carol and Peter moved to beautiful Victoria in 2015, to be closer to family and their boat at Canoe Cove.

Peter showed great bravery and determination throughout his journey with prostate cancer and will be deeply missed by family and the many friends whose lives he enriched.

He is survived by his wife Carol Elder; siblings Rick (Doris), Cherill (Ted Vaughan) and Kevin along with several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Arnold and Betty Johnston.

Special thanks to the VIHA community nurses at Oak Bay Gordon Head, who treated Peter with such care and respect; and Dr. John Jerome, who was always there when we needed him.

So sorry Carol. I enjoyed many hours spent with you and Peter at your home in Vancouver. Sad that we lost touch but I've thought of you both many many times. Big hug and I'm so sorry.

We shall forever miss our dear friend Peter. The home he shared with Carol was a second home to many. A gathering place to celebrate life and life´s events where music, dance, animated discussion and the odd cocktail were often the order of the evening dispensed with aplomb by our host extraordinaire. He really was a singular fellow and I know he´s lighting up a room in the cosmos somewhere, waiting for the party to start, waiting for us. Love you Peter. Love you Carol.

To our most cherished friend Carol, Peter´s many friends, Cherril, Rick, Kevin and your families; we share our very deep sadness in his passing. Peter was a once-in-a-lifetime friend to us and central in so many memories of the best of times. He will be very deeply missed by all of us.

Dear Carol, family and friends

Please accept my deepest condolences. Peter will be forever loved and missed. I have such fond memories of 50 years of friendship and adventures, living and boating together in Lindsay, Vancouver, Victoria and Costa Rica. I like to think of Peter B and Peter J on a boat together. R.I.P. Peter. May you find comfort, Carol, in your memories and love shared. You are loved by many Peter and Carol.

We love you, Carol and Peter. Thank you forever, for evenings in your welcoming, lovely home with friends, music, fun and rum! Before google, there was Peter. We knew we could save our questions about anything and Peter would know. We will always now wonder what Peter could tell us. We will miss you. Rest in peace and love Peter. Doug and Brenda Perry
