Peter Kappele Obituary

Peter Kappele

1932 - 2017

Peter died on May 20, 2017, with his daughter Danielle at his side, in the Palliative Care Unit at Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Just 26 days earlier, his beloved wife, Wendy Hacking, had passed away. Peter's first wife, Mary Kappele (nee Wraggette), and his son David Kappele predeceased him. He is survived by his sister Jane Kappele (Dundas) and daughter Danielle Kappele (Toronto).

Peter was raised in Hamilton and later Dundas, Ontario. Following two years in McMaster University's pre-med program, he changed course and spent 29 years as a CBC journalist. He worked in local television in Edmonton and Ottawa and later on national programs, such as Weekend and Marketplace. He was also the current affairs producer in the CBC's London bureau for 3 ½ years.

In retirement, Peter moved to Pender Island, B.C. and became deeply involved in community life. He joined the Lions, became a member of the editorial board of the Pender Post and was a founding member of the Pender Island Conservancy Society. Peter served on the Board of Directors of the Pender Islands Fire Protection Society for fifteen years and on the Southern Gulf Islands Emergency Program Commission for more than ten years. In 2009 Peter was honoured with a lifetime membership in Pender Island Fire Rescue (PIFR) for his exceptional dedication and support to the members and staff of PIFR. As well, Peter served on the Board of the Pender Island Health Care Society (PIHCS) from October 1995 to October 2000 and again from October 2005 to October 2011. He served as President twice in 1999/2000 and in 2008/2009. He was instrumental in getting the Healing Arts wing added to the original facility back in 1994, to house the Gulf Islands Home Support Services, including the community nurses, and later led the Board in support of the new medical clinic wing addition in 2008.

It is due to Peter's dedication and unwavering support that we continue to enjoy the high level of health and community support services the Pender Island community offers today.

Peter was a gentle soul with a strong presence, and even when no longer active on boards, he would check in regularly to make sure everything was going along 'as it should'. With a twinkle in his eye, Peter loved to spar with others over political and world affairs.

Peter was deeply curious, taking apart just about every gadget he had (and he had many!), to see how it worked. A creative person, he took up portrait photography and at one point, built his own 8" x 10'" large format camera. In recent years, he began making jewelry, initially from circuit boards and later using silver.

Always interested in others, Peter's life was full and caring. He will be missed.

Dear Jane and Danielle

My sincere condolences on the loss of a wonderful gentleman. I had the distinct pleasure of serving, with Peter, in a volunteer capacity at Camosun
College.

I truly admired and appreciated Peter's wisdom and wealth of knowledge. He was a very humble man who never mentioned his many accomplishments. Peter was a strong advocate for education. He provided strong leadership and was an ardent advocate for student learning and success.
