Peter Maidstone Obituary

It is with great sadness that we convey the passing of Peter Maidstone. His sudden death has sent shock waves through his community, reminding us of the fragility of life. Peter will be missed by so many as he played many roles: a friend, father, brother, husband, uncle and, most recently, a zaida. He was a teacher of Sociology and Asian Studies at Camosun for more than forty years. He travelled the world, stopping for a while in places such as Israel, China and Singapore. He was an activist, having been deeply influenced by the Haboniem Dror movement which he joined in his early teens. As an activist, Peter worked tirelessly to bring about social justice in a world that he deemed to be so unjust. He leaves behind his son Ezra (partner Patty), daughter Ida (partner Steve), former wife Sheila, sister Ruth and nephews Dani and Benji, along with their families. As well Peter leaves behind partner Helen, her son Tristram (partner Heather), daughter Emma (partner Benjamin) and grandchildren Henry and Rowan. Peter will be interned at the Jewish Cemetery in Victoria, BC, on Sunday, July 10th at 11:30 followed by a reception at 1:00 at 2117 Pentland Road. Everyone is welcome.

I'm very saddened to learn of Peter's passing. I was a student of his at Camosun in the mid 2000s and had the opportunity to take multiple courses with him, including a particularly memorable class where we travelled through Vietnam for three weeks.

He was intelligent, witty, humble and kind. And although we hadn't been in touch for years, the positive impression he left of on my life through his teachings and shared experience, will always be with me.

Thank you, Peter.

Peter exemplified the phrase "scholar and a gentleman" - I enjoyed chatting with him over the years, and remember his smile and wit. He was a principled man, raising a host of issues, whether in the classroom, or at a chairs“ meeting. He will be missed.

I was saddened to learn about the death of Peter. I first met Peter when he was Chair of the Pacific Rim Studies Program and I was hired to teach one of the program courses in 1989. During my time as an instructor of the program, Peter was always supportive of my professional activities. He was not just a colleague but a mentor to me. I learned a lot from his deep knowledge of the Asia Pacific region and his commitment to social and environmental justice. He will be dearly missed.

My sincere condolences to Peter's family & close friends. I had him for some courses in '78-'80 when I was at Camosun. He was an enthusiastic prof who always encouraged critical thinking. Although it was a long time ago now, I enjoyed those classes with him. And will always be grateful for his teachings. R.I.P.

Peter was one of my closest buddies on the Habonim workshop. I have kept him in my heart for all these years since 1965 , picked up where we left off when we saw each other since then, and his sudden passing leaves a Permanent lump in my throat. His memory will continue to bring me joy,and I wish that for all his loved ones

Peter was the best professor I had during my entire undergraduate studies. He inspired me to study Sociology which led to me majoring in Sociology at UVic. From what I knew of him he was a kind and gentle man. Sorry to hear of his passing. Condolences to the family.
