Peter Millward Obituary

MILLWARD, The Honorable Peter J. QC Passed away painlessly and peacefully in his home on Saturday April 15, 2017. Peter was born May 9, 1926 in Edmonton, Alberta, and moved to Kamloops with his family in 1939. After serving as a navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force and earning a law degree at UBC, Peter returned to Kamloops to practice law with Black, Stubbs and Millward, later becoming Millward and Co. In 1975, Peter was appointed to county Court, eventually being elevated to the Supreme Court of BC, where he retired in 2000. Peter spent much of his professional life residing in Victoria, living in Metchosin until he returned to Kamloops in 2014. While Peter loved his legal career, he also enjoyed golf, skiing, fishing, canoeing and mountaineering. Peter could often be found on his way to or from golf, out walking his dogs, enjoying a scotch or glass of wine, or taking the grandchildren on tractor rides. Peter also enjoyed travel and explored all corners of the world with his wife Phyllis by his side. Peter is survived by his wife Phyllis, his sister Estelle Kirby of Kamloops, BC, daughter Deborah Staples (Al) of Westwold. BC, sons Russell (Kathy) of Magna Bay, BC and Tim of Australia, his stepdaughter Debra Winiski (Dan) of Barriere, BC, and stepsons Ronald Johnson (Jan) of Comox, BC and John Carlson (Murielle) of Crowsnest Pass, AB, daughter-in-law Monica Strebel of Campbell River, BC and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren lucky enough to call him Papa. Peter was predeceased by his sister Susan Macauley. Special thanks to staff (especially Tracy) and residents at Ridgepoint Retirement Residence, first responders, paramedics and the RCMP. In accordance with Peter's wishes there will be no funeral service. Donations in memory of Peter to Alzheimer's Society of BC would be greatly appreciated. Had the pleasure of knowing Peter when he was still an active member of Royal Colwood GC. I will remember Peter as a soft spoken man who always listened attentively to your every word and offered sage and sound advice. He also bemoaned the state of his golf game but accepted whatever the round offered, good or bad. Rest in peace my friend. Richard ( Dick ) Austin

I will always treasure the chats we had, not about the law or the case he was presiding over in his dignified, sensible way, but about his love of the Metchosin landscape and his salmon fishing tips for the rugged West Coast waters. What a smart, kind, humane, funny, unpretentious man. To share a story or a laugh with him made even a good day much better. I will remember him fondly.
