Peter Sabo Obituary

SABO, Peter (Pete)
Peter (Pete) Sabo passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, in North Cowichan on January 3, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on May 29, 1939, in Viscount, Saskatchewan, to Andras and Mary, Pete grew up on the family farm.
Pete joined the RCMP right after high school and retired from the force as an investigator for Serious Crimes at E Division in Vancouver. His first posting was in Ladysmith, BC, where he met his wife and best friend, Darlene. Due to regulations preventing young constables from marrying, Pete briefly left the RCMP to become the Town Constable for Rosthern, SK, so he could marry Darlene. He rejoined the RCMP a year later and had postings in Ottawa, Kamloops, and Nanaimo, where he spent many years as an investigator. After 35 years of service, Pete retired from the RCMP and joined the ICBC Special Investigation Unit until his retirement to Victoria.
Pete and Darlene traveled across the country twice in their Green Hornet camper van and cherished time spent with their grandchildren, often camping or going on short trips. Ever the farm boy at heart, Pete was drawn to the carriage horses in Victoria and became a driver for Victoria Carriage Tours. Later, they fulfilled their dream of moving to a hobby farm in North Cowichan, where Pete joyfully worked with his draft horses, Teagan and Thyme, and found great pleasure in farm chores and driving horses.
Throughout his life, Pete was known for his engaging sense of humor, outgoing persona, and fairness in all his dealings. He deeply valued the many friendships he made over the years.
Pete is survived by his wife of 65 years, Darlene; his sons, Greg (Connie) and Peter (Michelle); his grandchildren, Lauren (Andrew), Kathryn (Daniel), and Joey (Ceilidh); his great-grandsons, Gabriel and Wesley; his cousin, Nusi; and his niece, Tracy (Gus). He was predeceased by his older brother, Frank.

A celebration of Pete's life will be held Friday, February 7, 1:00 pm at First Memorial Chapel, 375 Brae Road, Duncan BC.

I had the pleasure of working with Pete when he was with SIU and he was very good at reading people, telling stories and sharing his experiences. He told me one time he said to an insured, stand up and come over here and sit in my seat, and I´ll repeat what you just told me, and you tell me if you´d believe it:) he was a wonderful man and condolences to his wife and family.

Pete was a unique and effective investigator in the RCMP, which is the context in which I got to know him. Because he was such a straight shooter and decent person, folks on the street trusted him and as a result gave him leads they would not imagine sharing with most officers. As a result, he solved many crimes which all the computers and electronic surveillance mechanisms would have little hope of solving. He was such a treat in an often difficult, if not ugly, arena...criminal investigation and prosecution. Later in life when we both were in different pursuits, it remained a treat just to run across this fine and fun human being.
The world is better for having had him in it.
Rest in peace Pete.
My condolences to those who loved him.

Pete was that funny, gravel-voiced guy who was, plain and simply put, a really nice fellow. And he loved to laugh! My condolences to the family on the loss of such a good man.
