Condolences to you all. I enjoyed our chats and my husband too, who passed away this summer. Peter was so interesting to chat with. He showed us his wonderful carvings. He loved playing tennis. Linda Peterhegyi - West Shore Lodge

Dr Smart was certainly an amazing man. He leaves behind a wonderful legacy and many happy memories and stories that will be shared by his family and friends. My small story and memory involved once asking him if there was anything in life that he could do that he hadn't already done. Be a waiter he said. I think this would have given him the opportunity to meet even more people and share a laugh and a thoughtful moment. My deepest condolences to his family, especially my very great friend for life, Sacha.

Peter Smart was one of the great instructors at Royal Roads, a setting acclaimed for the excellence of its teaching. To have taken his second year statistics class was a privilege, and his tireless commitment as coach of the College cross-country running team resonates across the decades. Peter was relentlessly in the service of others, accomplished much, and exemplified how to live meaningfully. His legacy is irreplaceable.

Dear Sue,
One of the other people who signed the guest book called your dad "a whirlwind of happiness and joy". That's how I remember him too. What a life he had and what an accomplished man! Savour the memories.

Thinking of Dr. Smart always makes me smile, chuckle, and laugh. I met him as an OCdt in 1973 at RRMC and he was my first college math Prof. What a whirlwind of happiness and joy. He delighted in my math marks. He believed in the in-class 10 min nap to reinvigorate his first years. He would wake us up in 10 min. In Autumn of my first year I spent 12 days in the Esquimalt Hospital and returned to college in time for an 0800h class with Prof Smart. He was so delighted to see me, welcomed me back, and laughed even harder as he told me that our mid-term exam that day. After the weekend he entered our class with full laughter turned on and yelling my last name as he slapped the test on my desk - not an error to be found. Even announced how proud he was of me for talking taking two weeks off RRMC and aceing his mid- term. I stayed 4 years at Roads and was fortunate to win the Governor's General Bronze Medal for top Mark's in first year and the Governor's General Gold for top marks in my fourth year. Each year after the academic committee decided who won what, Prof Smart tracked me down within a half an hour to tell me in advance. I saw him many times at Roads thereafter. He is the most wonderous man I have met. I can't grieve for him, but I will celebrate his life and how fortunate I have been to know him.

So sorry to read of Professor Smart's passing. His first year at Royal Roads coincided with my first year (as a cadet), but I suspect our experiences and memories would have been quite different. He was my math prof - and a good one. He cared about his students, much to our benefit.

Sacha, Sue and the Smart family
Sorry to see the passing of your lovely father, grandfather, etc. What is not to say about this dear man, he was warm, funny, smart and a snappy dresser. If you came across him in passing he would brighten everyone's day around you. Sending warm thoughts to you all as you mourn the loss of a kind soul.
