Peter Smy Obituary
SMY, Peter Robert
July 07, 1936 - October 09, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Peter Smy after a short illness. He was 89 years old.
Left to mourn are his wife Pat; brother Andrew (Veronica); son Tom (Katherine); son Bill (Holly); daughter Katrina (Dominik); grandsons Brennan, Cody (Taylor), and Jordan; sister-in-law Marion and nieces Virginia and Lucy.
Peter was born in New Malden, Surrey, England to Robert and Muriel (nee Berry) Smy. He attended Glyn Grammar School in Surrey, and received his BSc and PhD degrees in Physics from Imperial College, London. Peter was later awarded a DSc in Physics from the same institution in recognition of a distinguished research career. After coming to Canada in 1961 he taught at the University of British Columbia, and then, for many years, in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. By the year of his retirement he had served as Professor, Chairman and Associate Dean of Engineering. He was a very popular teacher who received many awards.
Peter was an accomplished photographer and yachtsman, and for many years he kept a sailboat in Brentwood Bay, BC. He loved cats, dogs, fine dining and playing with his smartphone. He was a loving and generous father and grandfather whose memory will live forever in our hearts.
Peter spent his retirement with wife Pat at his home near Mill Bay, BC. His last years were spent happily in the devoted care of Bill and Holly, who enabled Pat and Peter to remain in their beloved home.
We would like to thank Carolina Polanco and Vicki Travers for their friendship and support.
In remembrance of Peter, you are welcome to make a donation to the charity of your choice, or to Cowichan Hospice House.
