Peter Wood Obituary

Peter Gillard Wood passed peacefully in Victoria, British Columbia on March 21, 2024, at the age of ninety-one. It has been a year since he passed and he is still missed every day by those who loved him.

Peter was a kind, brilliant person who so loved being with his family and they with him. He had a warm and generous heart, a great sense of fun and an amusing wit. His children have many warm memories and count among them running around in their pyjamas as preschoolers on the golf course in the evening while he played a quick 9 holes, singing Eriskay Love Lilt to the pigs at the farm down the road, camping trips with lots of singing and crazy sunglasses, late night games of solitaire and long conversations about doing the right thing. Peter was especially fond of being silly with his grandchildren and making them laugh.

Peter was a highly respected, very popular person who was liked by everyone who knew and came into contact with him. He genuinely enjoyed being with people and in the company of his many friends, for whom he was an exceptional host. Peter was very much in his element telling stories and pulling legs (with a twinkle in his eye).

He was an avid reader of both fiction (e.g., Graham Greene, James Michener) and non-fiction (e.g., Penguin History of Britain), loved watching sports and shouting at the TV (having played and captained teams in soccer, cricket and rugby), enjoyed a breadth of music (e.g., boys choirs, opera, Judy Collins, Galt MacDermot), had a fondness for chocolate and a glass of whiskey, was a formidable bridge player, and especially loved long (long) walks where he could chat with dogs he passed.

Peter was born in Wolverhampton, England and spent his early years in Linton and Eccleshall. These were happy times for Peter and fondly remembered. At 18 years of age, he enlisted for his National Service and that year became the youngest commissioned officer in the British Army Royal Regiment of Artillery. Following this, he attended Queen's College, University of Oxford and earned a BA in physics. During his time in Oxford, he played on a number of teams and had an active social life, which he credited with developing the skills he needed to be a strong leader.

After university, Peter decided to travel the world before settling into work life. In 1955 he left England for his first stop, Canada, and falling in love with the country, went no further. Over his 69 years in Canada, he lived in Toronto, Arvida, Senneville, Chambly, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria. During this time, he worked for (and in some cases lead) J. H. Crang & Co., ABEM Canada Ltd., Alcan, Canadian Ingersoll Rand, P. S. Ross Management Consultants, Institute of Canadian Bankers, Canadian Commercial and Industrial Bank, Wells Fargo Bank of Canada, Barklay's Bank of Canada, and Oxford Trust. He always sought to create positive work environments that allowed people to do their best. Peter enjoyed a challenge and once things were in a routine, actively sought out the next thing to improve.

Peter was predeceased by his father Frederick Daniel Wood, mother Phyllis Marjorie Wood (née Hall), first wife Patricia Jane Laurie Wood (née Burns), brother John Wood, sister Elizabeth Ann Hewitt, and son Christopher David Gillard Wood.

Peter is survived by his second wife Patricia Kongshavn, brother Roger Wood, daughters Elizabeth Wood, Sara Norum and Judith Wood, and his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Peter's daughters wish to explicitly thank the exceedingly compassionate and professional staff at The Heights at Mount View (especially those who worked on the second floor). To a person, each cared for Peter with sensitivity and dignity, and treated him as if he was a cherished member of their family.

If you have a memory of Peter you wish to share, you are welcome to post to the online obituary or email [email protected].

O Lord support us all the day long of this troublous life, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, Lord, in thy mercy, grant us a safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last (Prayer of Blessed John Henry Newman).
