Philip James Dunn Obituary

Born: Sept. 24, 1928; in Detroit
Died: Nov. 2, 2012; in St. Charles

ST. CHARLES – "What a beautiful smile you have, mind if I keep it? I collect them…"

Phil Dunn, 84, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, in St. Charles. He was born in Detroit, the son of Helen and Harlo Dunn. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1946 and married Sally Jane Norrstrom in 1951, whom he loved and stood by until her passing in 2010.

Phil served in the U.S. Navy, worked at Owens Illinois in West Chicago for many years and co-owned and taught classes at the Shutter Shack Photo Center in Geneva with his son, Steve. He partnered with close friend, Charlie Peterson, on River Valley Photographic Resources, where he captured and promoted the often unseen natural beauty of Kane County. A world traveler, poet, teacher and avid "smile collector," he gave self-made holiday cards to strangers and collected the biggest smiles from the most unlikely of faces.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sally; and son, Steven.

He is survived by his daughter, Tammi (Stu) Sava of Marengo; sister, Tam Mason of Richmond, Ky.; sister-in-law, Carol (Dan) Baert of St. Charles; daughter-in-law, Anne Pruitt of Batavia; grandsons, Chris (Savannah) Dunn of Oakland, Calif., and Tony (Zoe) Dunn of Perth, Australia; granddaughter, Suzie Pruitt of Batavia; great-grandchildren, Lucy and Eli Dunn; two nieces, four nephews and many grand-nieces and nephews; and adopted daughter, Cheryl Ano, and family of Batavia.

A memorial gathering and gallery of his work is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Yurs Funeral Home of Geneva, 1771 W. State St., with a ceremonial toast and story hour at 5 p.m. All are welcome to share a happy memory of Phil at this gathering of friends and family.

Donations may be made in Phil's name to two organizations that he cared deeply about: Living Dream Arts, 418 Second Avenue #303, San Francisco, CA 94118, www.LivingDreamArts.org; or Earthwatch, 1-800-776-0188, www.earthwatch.org.
