Phyllis Gaskell Obituary
GASKELL, Phyllis
Phyllis was born on February 18, 1924 in Ogmorevale, South Wales and died peacefully in Victoria on November 12, 2025 at the age of 101.
Phyllis served with the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) in London and Ireland during WW II before emigrating to Canada in 1947. Phyllis was most proud of the fact that she came to Canada on her own, not knowing what was ahead, for which she had no regrets. Phyllis's happiest moment in life was marrying Edward (Ted) Gaskell, with whom she had two sons, David and Brian.
Predeceased by her husband Ted and her older son David, she is survived by her son Brian, grandson Chad, and daughter-in-law Leslie, and her "lady friends from the theatre".
Phyllis worked for many years as a social worker, taking great joy in counselling unmarried mothers and adoptions for the City of Victoria and the Province of British Columbia, retiring in 1989.
Her real joy (besides her family) came from performing with the Victoria Theatre Guild at Langham Court Theatre (where she was a life member) and the original Bastion Theatre Company, where she met her best friend, Barbara Waldner. Phyllis attended Cordova Bay United Church where she found companionship, friendship and a warm comfortable nurturing feeling.
Phyllis will be missed.
A Memorial service will be held at Cordova Bay United Church at 813 Claremont Ave., Victoria on Saturday, December 13 at 2:00 pm.
