Ray Kenny Obituary
KENNY, Ray Allan
1946 - 2025
With great sadness we share that Ray Allan Kenny left this world peacefully May 24, 2025. He will be greatly missed by his wife Irene (Rene), his daughters Alison (Ander) and Erin (Tony), his grandchildren (Hannah, Harper, Maximus), and sister-in-law Caroline (Howard).
Ray was born and raised in Calgary. He studied archaeology at the University of Calgary earning an MA degree. In 1971 he supervised an excavation at Willows Beach and fell in love with Victoria. In 1972 he supervised an excavation at Soda Creek (Williams Lake) BC, met Rene and her family, and made many friends.
Their lives together began in Victoria in 1973. Ray worked briefly with the Royal BC Museum and for most of his career with the Province of BC. He travelled extensively, surveying for sites and as the Regional Archaeologist for the Thompson/Okanagan Regions. For many years he managed the permitting system for altering archaeological sites. For eight years Ray worked for the Saskatchewan Power Corporation. Although he was not fond of the weather in Regina, his beautiful daughters, whom he loved unconditionally and was forever proud, were born there and lifelong friends made. Upon returning to Victoria, the family home was two blocks from Willows Beach for 30 years.
Ray was happiest at the beach, which was a constant in his life. He loved to drive and also, to camp. Countless trips were made up and down the west coast mostly in the iconic blue Ford Econoline van. Memorable trips included travelling from Regina to New Orleans along the Mississippi River and from Victoria down the coast and through the American southwest. In the city he drove his 1965 Mustang coupe. He loved to cycle and religiously biked to work. Family camping trips often included cycling. Annual trips were made to the Caribou to celebrate family holidays and visit friends. There were also many trips to Seattle to watch his beloved Seahawks play football.
For many years Ray lived with Parkinson's Disease. Gradually its effects began to impact his life, but there was travel to Europe, Hawaii, Mexico and Belize to enjoy the sites, beaches, food and wine. Eventually significant changes were necessary including living in care. Throughout this journey we were supported by many caring VIHA health professionals. We wish to recognize Drs. Pakrasi, Mestelmann and Brook for their expertise and ongoing care. We also thank all the health care professionals and care providers at Mount St. Mary Hospital. Their dedication to providing compassionate care to Ray and support to our family made it possible for Ray to stay active for as long as possible and to pass with dignity.
For now, after more than 50 years together, this is the end, my beautiful friend.
