Richard GREGORY Obituary

Richard was born in Port Alberni, BC to Bertha (Burton) and Joe (Basterrechea) Gregory. Predeceased by wife Donna in 2019, Richard will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by daughter Nicole and son-in-law Jay, brothers Rodger (Susanne) and Ross (Carol), sister Diane (Eric), stepdaughter Janice (Craig), step-grandchildren Riley (Cali), Jake, Lucas, and Eva, stepson Doug, Nicole's mother Bernice, lifelong friend Derek (Dianne), and numerous other friends, family, and business associates.
Richard grew up in Vancouver where he attended St. Augustine Elementary School and Kitsilano High School, graduating in 1960. He graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1969 and an MBA in 1970.
Richard was third generation in the fishing industry where he fished the waters of BC, Alaska, and the Bering Sea, occasionally alongside his father 'Tatchu' Joe.
Richard joined BC Packers Limited in 1970 and moved from Vancouver to Harbour Breton Newfoundland to manage a fish plant. He returned to Richmond in 1973 and continued to work for BC Packers until he retired in 2006 as the last BC Packers employee.
After retirement, Richard moved to Victoria where he formed Stone Canyon Consultants Inc. In addition to consulting work related to the fishing industry, he continued to work on behalf of BC Packers/Weston in winding up the affairs of the former BC Packers until 2014.
In following with Richard's belief in "Putting more in, than one takes out", he was involved in volunteer work in the community including the Richmond Hospital Board, Vancouver Aquarium, Bamfield Marine Science Centre advisory committee, Steveston Harbour Board, and the University of Victoria Mentoring Program.
In later years, he spent many hours working in his garden and racing on the sailboat Pitoraq. He was a member of the Old Timers Book Club oral history project as a way to ensure a lasting legacy for an industry that has been a part of him and his family for over a century.
Richard's family would like to express their gratitude to all of the staff at Parkview residence for their care and kindness for the past two years. We are forever grateful.

A service for Richard will be held Friday, November 29 at 1:30pm at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, 4451 Williams Rd, Richmond BC. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be live-streamed: https://youtube.com/live/dkYajwCgaio?feature=share.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Richard's name can be made to Parkview through the St. Paul's Hospital Foundation https://helpstpauls.com (under gift information note Parkview Older Adult Intensive Treatment Unit) or The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Richard was good man and I enjoyed working with him at BC Packers for 15 years.

Nicole - I took a lot of videos of BC Packers and of your father. I posted the videos on YouTube if you wanted to see the old videos. Just look up BC Packers Videos.

I worked in the mailroom and remember when you worked in the head office one summer.

Take care and sorry for your loss
