Richard MORGAN Obituary

Richard passed away peacefully July 30, 2021. Richard leaves behind his wife of 10 years Lorraine Russell; his daughter Angela, his son Thomas/Ted and daughter-in-law Kate, and his grandson Austin; his sister Pat (Karl) Hergt and family including his two nephews Brad and David. He is predeceased by his first wife Dianne. Richard was born in Wales but grew up in Fernie BC. He lived in Smithers BC for several years before making Vancouver Island home. He had several careers during his life, including land surveying, claim staking, working with Bluebird Taxi and finally working for BC Assessment. He was passionate about music, history and mapping. He was an intelligent man with a sly sense of humour, and he will be missed. No service at this time. In lieu of flowers donations to your local historical society would be appreciated.

I'm so sorry about Rick passing away. Knew Rick many years ago through another dear friend. He was always so nice and great sense if humor. A large group of us always hung out in the old Scott's Restaurant for coffee that used to be downtown Victoria. We'd all be in there on way to work early in the morning and again after work to unwind. I hadn't realized that Rick had passed away until now. Sending his family warm hugs.

Somewhere around Grade 8 or 9, Richard was "parachuted" one year ahead into the class I was in, and he settled in very well indeed. He was clever, sociable, friendly, and very often funny. He quickly settled into both the skipped-grade and social catching-up scenarios, and he became a leader in class entertainment (both sanctioned and not).
He always showed grace in his behaviour.
He made the world a better place.

My brother Richard was a very complex very private man, with a volatile temper, and a heart of gold. He was like a second father to my Son Brad who lived with he and Diane in Smithers for a whole school year when he was in his teens. He taught Brad respect fo the small town life, and The north country.
Richard responded to his first wifes long battle with Cancer by stepping up to the plate, respecting her wishes to remain at home as long as possible, even when it meant he had to assume her total care between the nursing visits. I never heard him once complain.
A couple of years later he married Lorraine. They had a few good years together, sharing a dry sense of humour. Sadly, both of their health deteriorated very rapidly over the last few years, and in December, he was forced to go to full time care.
I have great admiration for Lorraine. In fact, I was very fond of both his wives.
The times Richard and I had together when we would talk, laugh and yes, argue the night away, are among my best memories of him. His knowledge of British Columbia history was amazing, particularly in mining, He took me to an old abandoned mine in Nanaimo, showed me prehistoric rock carvings along the side of the highway, expressing his frustration (often in colorful language) with the lack of respect these sites were getting,
He visited me in Bavaria shortly after Diane died. We had a marvelous time. It never stopped raining, but we found plenty to do.
We didn't always see eye to eye, but when the chips were down, he was there for me.
I shall miss you little brother,
With much love
Pat.
