Rick SMITH Obituary

Rick Smith of Victoria, born September 18, 1946, died peacefully on August 11, 2025, after a valiant battle with cancer. True to form, he faced the fight with courage, kindness, and humour — often cracking jokes even when the rest of us were trying to be serious. He was surrounded by family and friends in his final days, just as he would have wanted.

Rick spent his career as an urban firefighter, running into danger when others were running out, and saving homes and lives in the process. Off duty, he was dedicated to his family, his many friends, and, of course, his beloved dogs Sammie and Charlie, who were rarely far from his side, or even, in Sammie's case, on his lap — all 60 pounds of her.

Rick was happiest when traveling the world with his wife and best friend Kerry, tinkering in his workshop (also known as the "man cave"), or savouring a summer evening on the patio with good food and a drink in hand. He and Kerry enjoyed a years-long friendly cribbage rivalry, playing in the local pub as well as at numerous spectacular locations on six different continents.

As well, Rick was a man who never underestimated the importance of coffee with the boys, a cold beer, or sending out his daily round of jokes by email to brighten someone's morning (or make them groan).

Rick leaves behind his wife, Kerry Busheikin; his children Mike Smith (Rhonda) and Anne McIntyre; grandchildren Maya, Noah, Elyvia, and Leah; his brother Craig (Paulette) and sister Nancy (Nick). He will be missed deeply, but remembered with laughter, love, and stories that will continue to circulate for years.

In keeping with Rick's wishes, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the B.C. SPCA.

Yesterday

I have counted Rick as a good friend for over 40 years. In that time I saw a man who loved life and his family. Kerry, Anne and Mike - you were his life. He talked about you and his grandkids all the time. He had so many good memories of adventures he had with all of you. His corny jokes on the internet used to make my day. I will miss him.....

My condolences to Ricks family.

When Rick lived in Ontario I so enjoyed our times together with Sammie and my dog Nelli. When he moved to BC we kept in contact through the internet and passed back and forth our jokes.
He was a great guy, I regret I did not meet him sooner and that we didn't have the opportunity to spend more time together.

Rick and I have known each other since living in James Bay. We connected again when Rick was walking his dog in Colwood Creek park. We had many conversations talking about old friends and old times. Rest in Peace my friend. We will talk again and have a mug together

So sorry to hear of Rick's passing, I first met Rick when we were both electrical apprentices, before his firefighting career. Our paths crossed many times over the years and we had lots of good laughs over coffee. May he RIP.
