Robert AHRENS Obituary

Park Conservationist, Environmentalist, Family Man and Mentor:
Bob grew up on a small Kootenay farm which led him to a lifelong attachment to the out-of-doors and a wish to become a forester. Upon graduating from UBC he joined the BC Provincial Public Service and served in the Forest Service, Parks Branch, Ministry of Recreation and Conservation, and the Lands Service. He felt particularly privileged to be present when the Provincial Parks system was being designed and its policies formulated. He loved BC, his native Province, and became very familiar with a good part of it while actively involved in scouting areas that could become BC Provincial Parks and Campsites.
While Bob was dedicated to his career, he was also a family man and friend and mentor to many. Residing in Victoria, he loved sailing the BC coastline with his family, gardening, and thoughtful conversations on a multitude of different topics. He was quick witted and loved learning new things. Bob could fix anything and loved a good joke.
Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Marie Jose. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Marie Louise Stewart (Roy), and Yvonne Andrea Dales (Ross), his grandson Connor (Tai) and granddaughter Jenna, his nephew Bill (Cheryl) and niece Arlene.
Bob expressed gratitude for all the people who helped him along his life's path. He dreamed of a world without war, poverty, or damage to the environment.
Bob passed away peacefully in Vancouver with his family by his side.
There will be no service at his request.

Bob was my father, Don Macmurchie's, closest friend and much beloved by our family - as fine a friend and gentleman as ever was.

As described, Bob Ahrens was a friend to many, our mutual friend Peter Brunold was one. A former classmate of mine, he introduced us and decades later we look back fondly to time spent lake fishing on Vancouver Island.
Bob came as advertised, intelligent, witty and warm. Peter, Bob and I along with our spouses spent numerous times together along with Peter's Labradors, chasing the spirited cutthroat trout of a small, but virtually private Shawnigan-area lake.
The camaraderie, and stories shared on those outings made everything right with the world at least for a short respite away from waiting cares elsewhere. Bob was no small contributor and a raconteur at these times. He always seemed to enjoy the time as much as anyone, as did Jose in her time with us.
Even as we that are left miss these two loving people, it is comforting to think of them at last together again, perhaps even with a predeceased lab of Peter's at their side for mutual comfort.
