Robert Alger Obituary

ALGER, Robert (Bob)
April 27, 1946 - September 4, 2023
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, friend and colleague, Robert (Bob) Alger.

Bob passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023, after a very brief struggle with complications from pancreatic cancer.

Bob was born and grew up in the Esquimalt area of Victoria. He completed his apprenticeship as a Powerline Technician and shortly after started his career with BC Hydro, followed by work with various private contractors. Bob's dream was to start his own business - that dream came true in 1991 when he and his wife Ginny established Horizon Power.

Bob served on the Board of the Electrical Contractors Association for many years and had a profound impact on members of the electrical industry. He has been described as "an absolute icon in the electrical industry, his honor and integrity always shone through."

Bob was an avid golfer and a member of Royal Colwood Golf Club, playing many rounds with his great group of golfing buddies.

Bob and Ginny were season ticket holders and supported the Victoria Royals for many seasons. Along with hockey, Bob had a passion for classic cars and was the proud owner of a 1951 Ford convertible hot rod. Visiting the Barrett Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona with close friends was a highlight of his years of following classic cars.

Over the last couple of months Bob spent time with family and friends and welcomed many visitors into his home. While we are sad and will miss him terribly, we are so grateful to hear all the stories of his kindness, love of his family and friends, the legacy of his career and the impact he had on others in the industry. He will be remembered as a great mentor, leader and dedicated professional.

Family was incredibly important to Bob; he was very proud of and loved his three children Randine (Dean), Kasey, Mike (Carly) and his six wonderful grandchildren Dylan, Sydney, Peyton, Brady, Colby and Ryleigh.
Bob was predeceased by his father Albert (Al), mother Thelma and brother Doug. He will be remembered and missed by his wife Virginia (Ginny), his children, grandchildren; brother Don (Donna), sister Shirley (Rus); stepmom Bernice, stepsister Kimberly (Phil) and stepbrother Ian (Jennifer); and in-laws, John Meston, Liz Kennedy, Stuart and Shelagh Meston and MJ and Dave Reich and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Bob's life will take place Sunday, October 15, 2023, at the Saanich Fair Grounds, 1528 Stelly's Cross Rd, Saanichton, BC from 1:00 - 4:00pm.

If friends and family would like, donations can be made to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital & Healthcare Foundation or the BC Cancer Deeley Research Centre.

We are forever grateful to Dr. Liebscher and his team and the community health nurses for their extraordinary care and support for Bob and his family.

Although it seems difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, being able to look back at so many wonderful memories will provide comfort for us tomorrow.

Ginny & Family,

We were deeply saddened to hear of Bob's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
I thoroughly enjoyed working with Bob on the ECA Board.
We have fond memories of the many fun times we enjoyed with the two of you at several ECA functions. One of the most memorable was our crazy shopping trip to Costco and Walmart in Kona where we had many laughs.
We will miss the many walks that the four of us would take together.
I'll be sure to enjoy a nice single malt to remember Bob.

Bob was a treasured member of our Valhalla condo board in Whistler. He always had a smile, and was always ready to lend a helping hand. He was an first-rate gentleman, always professional and offered wise advice. He will be sorely missed. I still can't believe he is gone, but so glad for the years that I was able to work with him. My heart breaks for Ginny and the rest of Bob's family. He always spoke so highly of you all. May God comfort you during these difficult times.

Ginny & family - My sincere condolences & heartfelt respect on learning of Bob's illness & passing. Myself, and I hazard to guess, many parents of kids growing up on the Peninsula, will always be grateful to Bob & you for what you've done over the years to help young people into productive careers as power linemen thru employment at TFR and Horizon Power. With kind regards, Mark Albrecht.
