Robert Forrest Obituary

FORREST, Doctor Robert Douglas (Bob) Bob passed away peacefully January 13th, 2016 in the loving presence of his wife. Born August 15th, 1943 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; Bob was predeceased by his mother, Verna Forrest and father, Robert M. Forrest. He is survived by his wife, Susan Speight Forrest; sons, John (Katrina) and Brian; sisters, Lynne Pippin, Gail Mitchell (Alan), and Dawn Maddess; along with numerous nephews, nieces, and friends. He will be dearly missed. Bob excelled in academics and sports. He loved basketball (a great right hook!) and a good game of tennis. He completed his MD at the University of Saskatchewan and then went on to McGill University for his Neurology residency. He acquired encephalitis when working on the children's unit at Montreal Children's Hospital. Against all odds, he relearned to speak and walk again, and then went on to relearn his medicine and practiced for many more years in Montreal, Saskatchewan and B.C. Bob was a man of incredible perseverance, tenacity, and resilience. Well respected by his peers and a mentor to many. Thank you to Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion for their outstanding care and compassion and to Ron Postl, a shining star in Bob's life for the past 4 years. In lieu of flowers, donations to Victoria Epilepsy and Parkinson's Centre, or Victoria SPCA in memory of Bob would be greatly appreciated. A summer celebration of Bob's life will be held for family and close friends. "Hold fast to dreams for if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird that can not fly" Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.

Bob was a staunch friend in medical school-- partly because we shared similar views! In the summer of '66 we journeyed to Montreal in my TR3 2 seat sports car. As we had nearly run out of cash ----Bob had heard that if you went to a police station and the cells were empty you might be able to sleep there. Sure enough in Sault St Marie we were accommodated! Bob introduced me chess in Montreal as well as independence politics .We both interned in Montreal and when he became ill it was devastating. Later in Saskatoon we reconnected as he tenaciously relearned medicine. Let's all go to a small bar in Montreal and raise a glass in his memory.

I am so sad to hear this news. Bob lived just three doors down the street from me, and Lynne and I hung out together as kids, so I spent a lot of time in the Forrest household. And I was living in Montreal when he became ill, so went through some of that terrible time with Verna. That Bob was able to recover and return to a medical practice through sheer will and perseverance was pretty impressive. He was a very special guy and will be missed by so many.

I met Bob 43 year's ago on a CPR train heading to Ottawa and Montreal. After his illness he returned to McGill University.
His determination to continue with his career in Medicine was remarkable and he never faltered. A true inspiration and a loving soul. I will always remember his smile, friendship and dedication to his patients and career in Medicine. Nana Sloan

Memories of Bob: Brunskill Reunion, Saskatoon

Bob was a key part of my youth in Saskatoon. He was my best friend from K-10, living across Temperance Street. We went everywhere together: Prince Albert, Brunskill & City Park school and the playground/rink between our homes. Bob was outstanding academically - I know as we'd compare report cards walking home each grading period - he was stellar, an incentive for me. I credit his "right hook to endless practice together in our backyard BB court playing HORSE to perfection, and City Champs: http://www.reocities.com/bccs.geo/CPCI/59Champs.html
We kept in touch over the years plus visited Bob's family in Victoria and later at our Brunskill Reunion (photo) - it was just like we were back in school again.
Bob will be dearly missed by all and I'm so grateful for his friendship and inspiration during my formative years.
Bob will always live on in my memory as an inspiration.
May Bob rest in peace.
