Robert Lumley Obituary

LUMLEY, Robert Elwood (Bob)
January 13, 1941 - February 22, 2024

Bob, who was loved and admired by all who knew him, passed away following a courageous battle in the Bob Lumley way, surrounded by family and close friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, William and Stella Lumley (Simpson) and his loved and cherished wife, Betty Ann Lumley.

Soar to the heavens, we love you Dad, Grandpa P… your cherished family; daughters, Cardna (Mark) and Pam; son, Ken; grandchildren, Ryan, Jacob, Felicia, Katrina and their spouses and all your great-grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his loved and loving partner of the last 18 years, Bev Allen; her children, Lisa (Paul) and Brent (Teresa); her grandchildren, Matt, Amanda, Cael and Kelly and her great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brother, Bill Lumley (Bonnie) and family and sister-in-law, Fran Ireland (Dave) and family.

Life began in the town of Sidney, BC, where he lived out his early years and formed numerous lifelong friendships. Bob was without a doubt a gentleman who deeply cherished his lifelong childhood friends.

Bob's family history of fishing and his love for the ocean continued on with his own boat, "Lady Avril", that he commercial fished for many years. When not fishing he enjoyed spending time with his very good heating friends as an oil burner mechanic with Cook and Talbot.

A very humble and proud man who rarely shared his accomplishments, Bob chose sobriety in 1980 and with that formed another whole group of lifelong friendships.

Bob achieved his plan and design for the build of the Ogden Point Café where he was a successful operating proprietor for over 10 years. He welcomed all to the Café, located in the James Bay Community, with a smile and strong handshake.

Bob played senior men's baseball throughout his 20's and 30's and was Manager of the Victoria Centennials that won the Canadian Senior Men's Championship in 1970. The team represented Canada at the 1970 World Championships in Cartagena, Columbia, and at the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali, Columbia. He was very proud of his teammates when the team was inducted into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

In Bob's retirement years he enjoyed a good cup of coffee with a friend, travel, golf, sports and many meals shared with friends and family in Sidney, which often included walks along the Sidney boardwalk while admiring his beloved Sidney Sea.

The family wishes to thank the staff of North 6th floor VGH who provided such compassionate care.

A service for Bob Lumley will be held at 11am on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at St. Elizabeth Church, 10030 Third Street, Sidney, BC, with Fr. William Hann officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of BC.

Condolences may be offered to the family at mccallgardens.com.

I just moved back to Victoria (Dec. 2024) after 50 odd years away. One of the first people I wanted to reestablish contact with was Bob, so I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing earlier in the year. I played ball with Bob for several years in the Victoria Senior Baseball league ( the Gorge Hotel team comes to mind) and that Canadian Senior Men's Championship team of 1970. He was a great mentor and friend. My wife and I both loved Betty Ann and those three great children they raised are a beautiful testament to them both. So sorry this remembrance comes so late.

Condolences to all the family. Bob was a gentle giant of a guy with a huge heart and loved by so many. I was lucky to have shared the early years and get to know his wife and children. Ogden Point cafe was never the same without Bob's big smile and hug. Thinking of you all during this sad time. Love to all X
