Robert Powell Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) after a lengthy and courageously fought battle with cancer. Bob faced cancer the way he faced everything in his life-with dignity, humour, and grace, his beloved, wife Mary Lou at his side throughout. Bob passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends at home in Nanaimo.

Born in Powell River, B.C., Bob at 6 months old moved to Victoria, B.C. where he resided until 1969 when he married his sweetheart Mary Lou Poulsen (nee Wackett) with four children in tow. He worked at George W. Dorman's sawmill until 1985 when he, Mary Lou and their eldest son Mark bought their own business in Nanaimo known as "The Fun Centre" which they successfully operated for 22 years until their retirement. Bob, an accomplished golfer and gardener could be seen throughout his life several times a week gracing the greens and tending his prized roses.

Bob was a loving and devoted father to Rena Poulsen, Mark Poulsen, Teresa Powell and Chris Powell. He loved his grandchildren Tyrone and Dayton Poulsen, Ryan and Danielle Powell and recently delighted with his great-grandson Chase Poulsen.

Bob was predeceased by his parents Ruby and Ben; sister Sylvia Wackett (nee Powell); and brother Michael Powell. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Mary Lou; children Rena Poulsen (fiancé Darryl), Mark Poulsen, Teresa Powell and Chris Powell (wife Stacie); his grandchildren and great-grandson; sister Roberta Bauman and brothers Ben Edward, William "Bill" and Frank Powell, many nieces and nephews and the very best of friends Bob and Lynn Paine.

Although Bob's passing leaves a gaping hole in the lives of his family and many friends, his life leaves them with a vast and rich legacy of caring, happy, fun, generous, gracious, and mentoring memories. Our great fondness of Bob's singing and wonderful voice will remain within us forever.

We love you Bob Powell.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Bob's life on Sunday January 11, 2015, 1pm to 5pm at the Nanaimo Golf Club, 2800 Highland Boulevard, Nanaimo, B.C.
