Robert Spooner Obituary

SPOONER, Robert Edward September 12, 1920 - July 6, 2016 Our beloved patriarch Bob/Dad/Papa ended his earthly adventures of 95 years and 10 months after living on his own terms on his Central Saanich acreage for over 70 years. In his last month, he appreciated the comfort given at Saanich Peninsula Hospital. He is survived by his grateful children Rod (Claudia), Kathy (Ken Stubbs) and Lawrie (Jewel), and grandchildren Megan, Morgan, Myles, Angela, Scott and their spouses, and great-grandchildren Camden, Devon, Ethan and Nolan. Bob grew up on the Saanich Peninsula during the 1920's on his parents' farm. He joined the Air Force during WWII and flew Typhoon fighter bombers later on in his career with Squadron 438. Some Typhoon Squadrons averaged a 3-week life expectancy for their pilots but luck was with him and he served on 97 missions, most as Squadron Leader, into enemy territory and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Upon his return to Canada, Bob married Marie, to whom he remained devoted for 67 years, until her passing in 2013. Bob worked for Butler Bros for over 30 years and in his free time was a member of the Victoria Village Squires Barbershop Singers. He was also an avid gardener and fisherman and a member of the Victoria Golden Rods and Reels Club. Bob and Marie were active members in the Acti-Mets church social club. They were well known for hosting many celebrations and large social functions. He was loyal and generous to his family and to his vast network of friends, many of whom were like family. He will be deeply missed and all who knew him will be forever inspired by their memories of him. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at First Metropolitan United Church at 932 Balmoral Road & Quadra St., on Saturday, August 6th at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation, http://sphf.ca/ Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silver wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds, -- and done a hundred things.

Our sincere condolences to the entire Spooner family. Our parents Stewart and Hazel Thurber counted Bob and Marie as two of their dearest friends and shared many happy times with them through Acti Mets and The Golden Rods and Reels. Just two months before her own passing, mom and Patty were thrilled to attend Bob's 95th birthday party. Bob and Marie lived full and wonderful lives and are finally reunited. May all your loving memories of them both comfort you.

Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. I knew your Mom and Dad/Grandparents through doing respite shifts with Beacon for Marie. They were both very special people and I will never forget their kindness and caring throughout my time with them. I very much enjoyed Bob's stories of his time in the Air Force and how thoughtful he was with me during my difficult time while my Father was dying of Cancer. Two very special people are now re-united with each other. My thoughts are with you all.

Bob was a wonderful person, so welcoming to me. We started out as having a mutual friend about six years ago, to becoming friends. Each time in Victoria, we would have a delightful visit where he would spoil me with his breakfasts and lunches and I would bring some welcomed home baking in my suitcase; he was supportive to my endeavours and so open and happy to assist me -- and others researching the RCAF during WWII. It was an honour and a privilege to know Bob. Visiting Victoria will never be the same.
