Robert Sterling Obituary

STERLING, Robert Thomas (Tom) April 18, 1923 - December 19, 2014 Our Dad, Tom, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy, his son Bob, his granddaughter Emily, and his siblings Jack, Pat, Beryl and Lloyd. He will be remembered with fondness by his sons Jim (Terry), Terry, and daughter Maureen (Stephen); his grandchildren Michelle (Quinn), Andrea, Alan and Michael; his good friend Evelyn; his siblings Jim, Joyce, and Gwen; his dear friends and family; and his hunting companion, Lark. Dad was born to William and Anna (Loucks) in his beloved pioneer home built by his grandfather Robert on the open prairies of Melita, Manitoba. He experienced the warmth and support of his community of family and close friends. Dad served in the Air Force as a wireless air gunner during WWII. He "followed his bliss" in his illustrious career as a waterfowl and wetlands biologist for Ducks Unlimited. This job, he said, "gave him the privilege of exploring the Arctic and Mexico" where he got "to meet the people of the land." In his own words, he "lived a good life." Throughout his life and retirement, his family and friends shared his passion for the outdoors. These adventures are now our legacy. Heartfelt thanks to all who cared for our Dad. No service. NATURE "The bubbling brook doth leap when I come by, Because my feet find measure with its call; The birds know when the friend they love is nigh, For I am known to them, both great and small, The flower that on the lonely hillside grows Expects me there when spring its bloom has given; And many a tree and bush my wanderings knows, And e'en the clouds and silent stars of heaven" - Jones Very

I remember Uncle Tom with great fondness. He was very close to my father so we saw him often while I was growing up. He was an intelligent man with great compassion. He had a keen sense of family and made room in his heart for everyone. My condolences go out to all of his family and friends. He has left a tremendous legacy - a sign of a life well-lived.

Jim and Terry
I remember your dad was a really nice guy. I also remember his passion for Ducks Unlimited. He certainly had a very full life. My condolences to you both and the rest of your family.

Tom was one of a kind. He was genuine and personable and a great mentor to me and the many people who worked under and with him at Ducks Unlimited; I felt he more faith in our abilities and certainly less faith in his own than was warranted.

I think many of us will always remember the trip to Ft St John organized to dedicate a Ducks Unlimited project in his honour. One day he stayed back when we went hunting, but he still managed to bag the only deer, a one-antlered buck. That was great fun for teasing both ways.

He will be fondly remembered.

Uncle Tommy was amazing....I will miss him .I am so grateful that we had time to really visit the last few years. He impacted my life in positive ways...and my dog (Dotty) gave him a couple of good chuckles when we visited. My heart goes out to his family and friends for their loss....BUT...My goodness he had a HUGE life.....and he was loved....
thankful to have known him
