Robin Hopper Obituary

HOPPER, Robin April 23rd, 1939 - April 6th, 2017 FOR THOSE WHO MAY HAVE KNOWN ME, AND THOSE WHO REALLY DIDN'T, PLEASE ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF, I WAS A MAN OF CLAY AND GLAZE PUSHED MUD AROUND FOR OVER SEVENTY YEARS, OR TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND DAYS. Robin Hopper was a man of many parts, mostly worn out, rusty and dysfunctional, due to a lifetime of excesses! He started working with clay at the age of three and was still doing it over 70 years later. His lengthy, peripatetic career as a mud-pusher included side trips into working as a Professional Actor; Stage Designer; Theatre Property Maker; Stage Manager; Stage Carpenter; Failed Jazz Musician; Teapot, Wine-Bottle, Beer-Bottle, Trumpet, Trombone and Bugle Player; European Travel Guide; Founder of Several Clay/Art/Craft Organizations; Alchemist; Ceramic Chemist; Geologist; Primatologist; Sometime Linguist; Botanist; Ceramic Historian; Educator; Author; Garden Designer; Lecturer on Japanese Garden Design; Star of Stage, Screen and Potter's Wheel; and lover of all things beautiful! His convoluted life's journey has been a blast! He went many places, saw many things, met many people, bent many minds, made many pots and has now left with a giant smile on his face, knowing that there was little time left for more! Best wishes and thanks to all who made his life such a pleasure. Robin was born a twin in South London, England, the last child of Leslie and Elsie Hopper. He is pre-deceased by his twin sister, Avril, elder sister Mary, and brothers Roy, John, Michael and Brian. Robin is survived by his beloved wife, Judi Dyelle. He is also survived by his children Karen, Sarah (Brian), and Jonathan (Elizabeth) and stepdaughters Midori (Richard) and Morgan (Tyler). There are also ten grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces and their progeny scattered around England, Canada and Australia. A Celebration of Robin's life will take place May 16th at 2pm at Olympic View Golf Course 643 Latoria Rd., Langford, BC. Please honour Robin's memory by supporting your local arts organizations and artists.

I had met Robin through the Hardy Plant Group of Victoria. He was a sincere and gentle man. I loved his warmth, inclusiveness, and his keen love of plants and gardening! I will always remember his wonderful garden and pottery. My condolences to Judy and family.

Such a fine man and great artist, winning the Sophie Bronfman Award. I was lucky enough to hear him speak at MISSA and was enthralled by him, as were all who met him, I understand. So, we lose a great gift from our community. However, he leaves behind a trail of such beauty in his ceramics that he will always be with us. With love and such gratitude for who he was, is. Some years ago, I bought one of his CD's so I could learn to throw by watching him. What a wonderfully talented mam. He is truly one of the great potters.
