Ronald JAY Obituary

Ron passed away peacefully at his home with his wife of 65 years Elaine at his side. Ron was born in Peterborough Ontario where he learned to cook and bake from his mother Alice. Ron was a well known athlete who excelled in lacrosse, hockey and football. He moved to Victoria to play lacrosse for the Victoria Shamrocks where he was often the leading scorer throughout the 50s and 60s. While playing he also coached the Junior Shamrocks to their first Minto Cup win in 1962. Ron was inducted to the Shamrocks Wall of Fame and the Canadian Hall of Fame.
For all Ron's Sporting accomplishments, he was a true family man who took pride in his children and wife supporting them in whatever they chose to do. He coached kids lacrosse and managed and help coach soccer for the Gorge Soccer Association with his two long time friends Cliff Newman and Bob Brown. Ron was often heard encouraging a young player with sayings like "That's great", "well done"", "Good for you, but are you having fun?"
Ron was very proud to serve his community as a Saanich Firefighter .He retired in 1988 as a Captain.
Ron is predeceased by his older brother Fred (Mary) and survived by his wife Elaine (nee McBride) sisters Karen and Christine (Stan), sons Terry, Glenn (Linda) daughters Susan (Michael) and Leanne. He had many nieces and nephews both in BC and Ontario. He loved his 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren deeply always supporting them by watching them playing sports, music concerts or dance recitals.
The family would like to thank Dr. Benjamin How for all the years of wonderful care. Special mention to nurse Tarryn who was a true blessing for the family. A shout out to all the Saanich Firefighters for their support, in particular Chris Adam.
There will be a private family service for Ron and a Celebration of Life for all in the New Year.

Dear Elaine and Family,

Condolences on the passing of Ron who was a sincere gentleman.

Ron was friend of my parents and my uncle. Anytime I saw Ron he always had a pleasant word to say and would ask how my parents were.

I saw Ron frequently in the early mornings, when he would walk to Save On Foods to get a copy of the Times Colonist. In passing me, he would always cordially say 'good morning' with that warm smile of his.

Respectfully,
Ajmare Sundher
