Russell DAVIDSON Obituary

Dr. Russell Davidson died peacefully at home with his wife, Mary-Wynne Ashford, at his bedside. Grandson Sam and his wife Eva were also with him. He is predeceased by his infant daughter, Mary Jane, and survived by his first wife, Patricia, four daughters, Katy Ann Davidson (Bruce), Victoria St. Clair Krupa (Daryl), Gillian Margaret Davidson, and Emma Louise Davidson; his three step-children, Karen Ann Barnett (Richard), Graham Allen Ray Ashford (Theresa) and Patrick Robert Ashford (Leah); and ten grandchildren: Brandon, Connor, Natalie, Sam (Eva), Lucie, Aidan, Gavin, Quinn, Lauren and Sephina.

He was born in Montreal PQ, and grew up in Wick, Scotland. After his parents died when he was young, he was raised by his uncle Eric and great aunt Emma. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1954. After completing his training he did three years of military service in the Royal Navy as a Surgeon Lieutenant on HMS Warrior. He observed the hydrogen bomb tests at Christmas Island, an experience so horrifying he never forgot it. He emigrated to Canada in 1959 and practiced family medicine in Victoria. He loved his patients and found medicine a deeply satisfying career for forty years.

His great aunt Emma, who was an art teacher, taught him to carry a sketch-book at all times. He left behind dozens of books of pencil sketches. He particularly loved portraiture, figure drawing and calligraphy, but also painted watercolors, sculpted, and made silver jewelry.

He retained his skill at portraiture until the last few months of his life. Artist Alison McKinnon, took him out two afternoons a week for over two years. They sketched together and drank coffee in his various haunts. When he couldn't manage getting to and from the Portrait class at Monterey Rec Centre by HandiDart, Alison signed up and took him with her.

We want to thank Gina Lagata and all the other people who cared for him before he went into St. Charles Manor, the staff at St. Charles, especially nurses Wilma Ramos and Leah Chisholm who were so committed to his care in the last week of his life. We thank Doctor Ross McKay, his highly skilled family doctor for over thirty years, Dr. Ian Gillespie, who diagnosed his dementia and helped us to respond, and Dr. Douglas McGregor from Hospice Victoria. We are very grateful to Hospice PRT nurse, Sandra Danelesko.

We thank our friends, our children, grandchildren, and extended family for their warm and generous support through the past few years. Mary-Wynne is deeply grateful to Sam and Eva Barnett who stayed over with her for two weeks giving love and support. Their extraordinary compassionate care allowed Russell to come home for his final days.

A Celebration of his life will be held at St. Ann's Academy on September 8th from 4:00 to 6 pm.

In lieu of flowers you might wish to make a donation to Victoria Hospice.

I was very good friends with Russell's daughter Emma and did a small amount of office work for him and Mary Wynne at there home back then. I recently came across an old postcard from Russell dated Feb 1990, and it brought back so many memories. Sorry to hear of his passing, my condolences to the family. I lost contact with Emma years ago but it would be wonderful to reconnect.

Russell ws my first 'family physician' when my family moved to victory in the early 1960s. In the last 60s I learned how to assist as an MOA during transition to university life. He guided me through many traumatic periods of my life in the 70s. We keep in touch for decades. I met Mary Wynn in Alberta then in Victoria when their relationship blossomed. My sincere condolences to all members of his extended families. I look forward to reconnecting with Mary Wynn & Hospice Victoria. Peace in this world & the next. Margaret Vickers Hyslop

Russell exemplified all of the best characteristics of a gentleman, scholar and kind human being. His keen interest in all things made him such a joy to be around because he always wanted to learn - about new things and other people's stories.

He often had a story that he would tell. Always with a twinkle in his eye and often followed by a great laugh.

I consider myself extremely lucky to have had Russell in my life as he and Mary Wynne provided important guidance and were mentors. They inspired and helped me go on to post secondary education and provided invaluable guidance through tumultuous times.

Russell had a great joy for life - learning new languages, drawing and taking photographs. I have always cherished a number of his ink studies which he gave me years ago. They will always remind me that they were drawn by a hand that helped so many people in so many ways through his life.

I am sorry that I was not nearer to have told Russell what a great person and how important he was to me before he passed.

Dr. Davidson made such a tremendous impact in my life at a very pivotal time. He also delivered my daughter and was so compassionate and caring to us both. He will always be remembered fondly by myself and my family.

Russell was our family doctor. He delivered our second son Tariq who turned 46 this year. He did a lovely pencil sketch of me on a linen table cloth at the Victoria Golf Club many New Years ago.

Dr. Davidson was a great doctor. He took his time with his patients because they were important to him and he treated them with the utmost respect.

Dr. Davidson believed personal care was most important. It started when you walked into the office and greeted by incredible ladies at the front desk. He treated his staff and patients like family because he cared.

I will miss his humour as we always joked with each other.

He took care of our family for years and we will miss him dearly.

Our condolences to the family.

Sincerely,

David and Marnie (Stewart) Newsome

Russell was a wonderful, patient and kind physician. He was my mentor and friend from my intern days at St. Joseph's Hospital. I still have the sketch he did of me at a Victoria Medical Society meeting.
Blessings, Dr. Michael Bassett
