Sadie Smart Obituary

SMART, Sadie February 19th, 1928 - May 23rd, 2022 Sadie passed away peacefully at Resthaven Lodge in Sidney. She is survived by Ron, her husband of 60 years, her daughters Fiona and Alison, her son Kenneth, her brother Jack (living in Scotland) and her sister Betty (living in The United States). She was so very, very proud of her 5 grandchildren Elizabeth, Dominic, Brooke, Kyle and Bandon. Sadie was a Scottish lass, born and raised in Glasgow where she worked for a number of years. But seeking a change of venue, she immigrated to Canada on her own in 1962, ending up in Vancouver. It was there she met and married her husband, Ron. Ron also grew up in Scotland in a small town near Glasgow, but they were destined to meet and marry in Vancouver. Sadie was a devoted mother, and after the birth of her first child, chose to be a stay at home mom dedicating her time and energy to raising her children, not returning to work until they graduated. The family moved to England when Ron worked for BC House in London. While there the family would spend time each summer visiting relatives in Scotland and exploring the many attractions including looking out for Nessie, the Loch Ness monster whom they did not spot. Returning to British Columbia, the family settled in Central Saanich making new friends. Sadie was a pioneer and long-time member of Friendship Community Church and devoted countless hours to her church, helping in Sunday school, baking sales and many lunches to help those less fortunate. She loved to travel and enjoyed RVing through Canada and the US with her beloved husband Ron by her side with occasional trips back to Scotland to see her brother and sisters. Sadie volunteered at Riding for The Disabled. Sadly, all these activities came to an end when she suffered a stroke, leading to a slow and gradual decline in her health, and she went into the arms of her God, whom she had worshipped since she was 13. A celebration of her life will take place later this year. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the SPCA as Sadie loved her beloved companion, Trixie who passed a few years earlier. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff at Resthaven Lodge for their wonderful care and support over the years.

Sad to hear of the passing of Sadie she was a very sweet lady and kind to all she met. She had a wonderful sense of humour, many phone calls were full of laughter as we recalled our memories of the Glasgow lingo. My condolences to all the family at this sad time.

RIP sweet Sadie...a dear friend who I met many years ago while working at Associated Physicians, she took me under wing & taught me my first job in the clinic. So many happy memories of our years together. We enjoyed our cups of tea at breaktime & our chats. She was kind to all, & was so proud of her family whom she talked of often with so much love in her heart. Condolences Fiona & all your family at this most difficult time
