Sam Kowalko Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Sam Kowalko on October 31, 2018. A Celebration of Life will take place at 2:00pm on Saturday, January 19th 2019 at the University of Victoria in the Cadboro Commons Building. Sam spent probably his most influential 30 years in Victoria, where he was a fixture of the business landscape, countless amateur hockey executives, and patriarch for his brothers, sister, and extended family on the Island. He was the glue that brought so many people together in every facet of life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice in memory of Sam or perhaps someone who was close to you.

My deepest Condolences to the Kowalko family thank you Sam and the rest of the Kowalko family for starting the Salsa and keeping junior hockey going in Victoria. Rest in peace Sam. I signed on as a season ticket holder in 1994 and I still am 25 years later.

During our formative years growing up in the lovely Swan River Valley, and attending our welcoming Ukrainian (Bethel) Baptist Church, the Lysack and Kowalko families were among a group of very devoted friends. As life dictates, we all travelled our separate ways and it was only last April that my brother, Bruce, and I were so privileged to reunite with dear acquaintances from our youth, including Sam and Allan, and to meet Sam's beloved Esther at last. The astounding news of Sam's sudden passing saddens us deeply and we express our deepest compassion to the myriad of family and friends whose love he shared. Good-bye, Sam, all too soon.....heaven is blessed indeed.

Many days/miles travelled for hockey along with those hockey meetings. We often talk about Sam's dedication to the game and his family. Our thoughts are with you all.

We were so shocked to hear the news of Sam's passing. Sam was such a quiet, humble guy with a great smile. He will be missed by so many. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Esther and all of the Kowalko family.

We are thinking of the entire family and all Sammy's friends. He was a great man and we are so lucky to have known him. Many will miss his incredible sense of humour and of course that smirk ...
