Shelley GURVEY Obituary
After surviving breast cancer for almost a decade, Shelley Gurvey died peacefully in Victoria on August 13, 2023.
Shelley was born in Toronto to Bunny and Gerry Gurvey on December 16, 1951. She grew up, attended university and raised her family in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She obtained her master's degree from the University of Central Michigan while working full time and raising her children. Shelley would eventually move to Vancouver and then Victoria. She loved living by the ocean and enjoying nature on long, brisk, walks. She also spent cherished time at Lake of the Woods.
Throughout her professional life, Shelley endeavoured to support patients, residents, families, volunteers and colleagues. After a long and strong career in healthcare, and multi-dimensional volunteer work, Shelley was delighted to retire.
She will be remembered with love by her almost perfect children Kelsey (Matt) and Mac (Jessica) and her spectacular grandchildren Sienna, Rory and Mason.
Her sisters Melanie (Wayne) and Brenlee (Allen), niece Ilexa (Adam), and nephews Avery, and Brady loved and supported her until her last breath.
Shelley was incredibly fortunate to be part of an expansive family of aunts, uncles and a plethora of cousins. She forged and nurtured lifelong relationships; human, cat, and dog (most importantly, Oreo, Milo, Ten, Abbey and Penny). She had a cross-country community of dear friends.
Shelley sincerely appreciated the people who journeyed with her as she navigated through her almost decade-long cancer treatment. She had special gratitude for Drs. Allison Ross, Pauline Truong, Vanessa Bernstein, Konia Trouton, Stephanie Green and her long-time family physician, Dr. Laura Phillips. Gratitude also to the Royal Jubilee Hospital 4-South staff and palliative care coordinator Katie Henessey.
As per her insistence (Shelley always lived her life on her own terms), there will be no formal services but if you wish to celebrate Shelley's life, please volunteer, grow something beautiful, donate blood, pet a dog or wear a bright colour. She would have been honoured to have donations in lieu of flowers sent to Dying With Dignity or your local SPCA.
