Shirley McCann Obituary

McCANN, Shirley Ellen Ruth (nee McNair) October 19, 1929 - September 2, 2016 It is with heavy hearts and fondest memories that we say good-bye to Shirley Ellen Ruth (McNair) McCann. Shirley was born in Shoal Lake, Manitoba on October 19, 1929. She was predeceased as a young adult by her parents (Ernest and Emily McNair), her brother and sister-in-law (Murray and Gwen McNair), and in 2005 by her cherished husband of 49 years (Dr James Alan McCann). Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her son Ken (Bev), daughter Susan Paltiel (Jason), grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her beloved brother Vern McNair (Marj), as well as many nephews and nieces. Shirley grew up as the youngest and only girl on the McNair family farm in Shoal Lake, Manitoba. After high school she entered nursing at the Winnipeg General Hospital, graduating at the top of her class in 1952. While at the hospital she met and fell in love with a handsome young medical student and, when the opportunity came, she followed him to the west coast. Shirl nursed in the emergency ward at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. Al and Shirl were married in 1956 and the newlyweds moved to Powell River. After moving to the Comox Valley in 1958, Shirley was an active member of the community filling her days caring for others. She was involved in and led numerous local organizations such as the hospital auxiliary, home maker service, Red Cross blood donor clinics, candy strippers, and the Beaufort Association. Shirley was an active member and an elder of St. George's United Church. In addition, she enjoyed curling, golfing, gardening, hosting social events at her home and relaxing summers at Shuswap Lake with the family. Shirley will be remembered for her gracious hospitality, her generosity and caring of others, and her infectious smile. Mom, Nana, Greatnana we hold you dear in our hearts and will cherish our memories of you forever. The family would like to thank the staff of Omnicare, St. Joseph's General Hospital TCU and the Sidney Care Home for their compassion through this last year of Shirley's life. A celebration of Shirley's life will take place at noon (12pm) on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Comox Valley Funeral Home, Cremation and Reception Centre, 1101 Ryan Road, Courtenay.
