Shirley RAINEY Obituary

Shirley Rainey passed peacefully at Saanich Peninsula Palliative Care Unit.

Born in Long Ashton, Somerset, Shirley was the daughter of Alicia Erskine Maunsell and Professor Bertie Thomas Percival Barker.

After graduating from St. Loyes School of Occupational Therapy in 1964, she immigrated to Canada (solo) at the age of twenty-five. Arriving in Vancouver in 1969, she worked at GF Strong Rehab, the VGH Burn Unit, and as a Long Term Care Case Manager at Vancouver South Health until her retirement in 2002. A dedicated Master Gardener, Shirley spent her retirement years volunteering in her community and working with St. Mary's Church where she sung in the choir and assisted with church events through the parish council. Well known for her fastidious punctuality, meticulous planning, generous spirit and warm laugh, she will be missed by many.

Shirley is predeceased by her siblings and parents, and is survived by her son Mark Rainey.

The memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Saanichton on Saturday, September 9th at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Knowledge Network or volunteering at your local palliative care unit.

Just remembering Shirley as it was about now that she would have been sending off her Christmas cards - hers was always the first to arrive. My memories of Shirley go back to Long Ashton and beach holidays in firstly Saunton and then North Cornwall in the postwar years where families had to take their ration books to the hotel or guesthouse. May you rest in peace in God's presence. Mary P
