Simon Wade Obituary

WADE, Simon Armigel 1942 - 2017 Simon Wade, following an almost ten-month battle with pancreatic cancer, passed away with quiet grace on Monday, May 15th at his home, surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving wife Mariev, his children, Jon and Alana, his grandson, Jonas, his brother, Andrew (Jocelyn), sister, Margo Edgar (John) as well as several nieces and nephews. Not counting a "gap" year as a locally-engaged chauffeur at the Embassy in Paris, Simon saw thirty-seven years in the Canadian diplomatic service beginning with a short stint at the UN followed by postings to Ireland, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Barbados, Guyana - concurrently Suriname, and Trinidad-Tobago, the last two as Head of Mission. As well as his often expressed pride and allegiance to Canada's Foreign Service, he had a deep love for his family and friends and "his" Vancouver Island. A life-long passion for golf, he was the longest serving active male member of the Victoria Golf Club. He served on the Board of Directors of the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific for seven years, three as President. A private family service will be held. At Simon's request in lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific or to the Vancouver Island Centre BC Cancer Agency.

Dear Mariev and family: I just heard of Simon's passing from a friend at Global Affairs. I loved working for Simon with his enthusiasm and zest for life. He was a wonderful Head of Mission and I will miss him very much. I am glad we connected again after our posting together in Trinidad.

I was greatly saddened to hear of Simon's passing. I knew Simon from Gayana when he was Canada's High Commissioner. He was a fair man with a great sense of humour. I both respected and admired Simon, he will be missed.

I'm very sad to learn of Simon's passing. Though we never met, I so enjoyed the few conversations I had with him about his grandfather, AJT Taylor, about whom I had written a magazine article. My heartfelt condolences go out to those who knew him and, I'm sure, loved him well.
